A driving school's price in Malaysia is a package, and it's easier to compare once you know what the package has to cover. The law fixes the route: a theory course and test, a learner's licence, a minimum number of training hours, a JPJ test in two parts, then two years on a probationary licence. What schools charge varies by institute, by licence class and by where you live, so ask for the package itemised against the steps below.
The route to a car licence, in order
- Be old enough. The minimum age for a car licence (Class D, or Class DA for automatics only) is 17.
- Register with a driving institute. You have to go through a JPJ-registered driving institute; you can't book the tests privately.
- Take the KPP01 theory course at the institute.
- Pass the theory test (Part 1, on road traffic law). Passing it gets you a learner's driving licence, the LDL, which lets you start practical training.
- Complete the practical training: at least 6 hours on the circuit and 10 hours on the road under JPJ's curriculum, plus any extra minimum the institute sets.
- Pass the JPJ driving test. JPJ examiners run it in two parts, the circuit test and the road test.
- Collect your probationary licence, the PDL. It's valid for two years, you display P plates, and it's cancelled if your KEJARA demerit points pass 20.
- Convert to a competent driving licence, the CDL, when the probationary period ends.
These are the steps as JPJ and the government portal describe them in November 2026. Ask the institute how long the waiting times for each test are in your area; that's what sets how long the whole thing takes.
What the price covers
Compare schools line by line. A package usually bundles some or all of these:
| Part | What to ask the school |
|---|---|
| KPP01 theory course | Is it in the package, and is it online or in class? |
| Practical lessons | How many hours are included, and is that more than the JPJ minimum? |
| Use of the car for the test | Included, or charged on the day? |
| JPJ fees | Learner licence, test fees and the probationary licence: in the package or paid separately? |
| Retests | What does a second attempt at the circuit or road test cost? |
| Class | D (manual and automatic) or DA (automatic only)? |
If you fail a part, the retest is paid on top, so ask what it costs before you sign up.
D or DA
Class D covers cars with or without a clutch pedal. Class DA covers automatics only, which includes electric cars, but not a manual. If there's any chance you'll need to drive a manual, learn for D. Our guide to driving licence classes has the full list.
What learners ask
How long does it take to get a licence?
The minimum training is 16 hours of practical lessons plus the theory course, but the calendar time depends on test slots at your institute and whether you pass each part first time. Ask the school for its current waiting times.
Can I drive alone on an L licence?
No. The learner's licence is for practical training with your institute. You drive on your own once you have the probationary licence.
Can a P licence holder rent a car?
The law lets a P licence holder drive, but each rental company sets its own age and licence rules, and many ask for more. Grandpride's requirement is CHECK: minimum age and licence type, including whether a probationary licence is accepted, for self-drive rentals. Our guide to car rental age in Malaysia explains why companies differ.
What do demerit points have to do with it?
On a probationary licence, more than 20 KEJARA points cancels the licence. Our guide to KEJARA demerit points explains how they're added.
Until the licence comes through, you'll need someone else to drive. For an evening out or a family event, a chauffeur by the hour is booked from 3 hours, and once you're licensed and old enough, the rental fleet starts with a Perodua Myvi at RM 200 a day.
