The best time to visit Malaysia for a road trip, month by month

For a road trip around Peninsular Malaysia, the best time to visit is June to August. The southwest monsoon keeps most of the country drier then, and the east coast, which spends November to March under heavy rain, is open for the season. The west coast and the highlands work year-round if you drive in the morning. What spoils more road trips than weather is traffic: the days around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and long weekends.

The two monsoons, for drivers

The northeast monsoon runs from November to March. It brings Malaysia's heaviest rain to the east coast of the peninsula (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and east Johor), often with large floods. Floods can close roads, and many small resorts shut for the season. Our guide to driving in monsoon season covers what to do if you're caught in it.

The southwest monsoon, from late May to September, is the drier spell for most of the country. Sumatra's mountains shelter the peninsula's west coast, and most states see far less rain.

Between the two come the inter-monsoon months, around April to May and October to November. Mornings are usually clear and the afternoons build into thunderstorms, and on the west coast those transition months bring the highest average monthly rainfall of the year. Leave early, arrive by lunch, and you'll miss most of it.

Holiday dates for 2027 are from the government's holiday calendar as reported in October 2026; Hari Raya, Hari Raya Haji and Deepavali depend on the lunar calendar and can shift by a day. Our 2027 public holidays and long weekends and 2027 school holidays guides have the full lists.

When to go where

East coast: June to August

Cherating, Kuantan, Terengganu and the islands off them are at their best in the dry months. Out of season many small resorts and restaurants close, sometimes without notice. If you're there to surf, though, the swell comes with the monsoon, roughly December to February; our KL to Cherating guide covers both seasons.

West coast: any month, mornings first

Penang, Ipoh, Melaka and Taiping can be driven all year. In April to May and October to November, plan to be off the expressway by early afternoon, when storms are most likely. Sekinchan's paddy fields are greenest after planting and golden around the harvests, about May to June and November to December.

The highlands: avoid the holiday weekends

The Cameron Highlands average about 18 °C whatever the month, and Genting and Fraser's Hill are cool too. The weather matters less up there than the crowds, and the hill roads are slow on any long weekend. Our KL to Cameron Highlands guide has the timings.

Festive traffic beats weather

The biggest delays on Malaysian roads come with the balik kampung exodus before Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year, and on long weekends when school holidays line up with a public holiday. LLM, the highway authority, forecast 3.3 million vehicles on the highways around Hari Raya Haji and the school holidays in 2026. If your dates are flexible, leave two days before the rush or on the holiday itself. Our guide to festive season traffic explains the patterns.

The right car for the month

In the dry months, a convertible earns its keep on the coast roads; the convertible list includes the BMW Z4 at RM 1,500 a day. In the wet months, take a comfortable SUV with good visibility. Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, with +50 km, +100 km or unlimited mileage to add for long trips, and cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia. The full fleet shows which cars are free on your dates.
