Car tint law in Malaysia, window by window

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 2 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Mercedes-Benz CLS350

Under the car tint law in Malaysia, as at November 2026, the front windscreen must let through at least 70% of visible light and the front side windows at least 50%. The rear side windows and the rear windscreen have had no limit since 2019, so they can be as dark as you like on a private car. The percentage is visible light transmission (VLT), and it's measured on the installed window: the glass and the film together, not the film's label.

WindowMinimum VLTIn plain terms
Front windscreen70%Light film only. Most factory glass already blocks some light
Driver and front passenger windows50%Moderate film
Rear passenger windowsNo minimumAny darkness
Rear windscreenNo minimumAny darkness, as long as you have side mirrors to see behind

The rear rule changed on 8 May 2019, when the Transport Minister lifted the old 30% minimum for the rear windows of private cars. The front limits stayed. The same rules apply to e-hailing cars.

What people get wrong

"The film says 70%, so I'm legal." The law counts the glass and the film together. Windscreen glass isn't perfectly clear, so a 70% film on it gives a reading below 70%. Ask the installer to meter the window after fitting, and keep the reading.

"Dark rear windows need approval." Not since 2019. On a private car, the rear side windows and rear windscreen can be any shade without an application.

"Anyone can get darker front windows with a letter." You can apply to JPJ for darker front tint, but approval isn't automatic. Exemptions are given for certified medical conditions that need extra sun protection, and in some cases for government officials or people with a verified security concern. You need the documents and the approval before the darker film goes on. When the scheme was announced in 2019, police vetted applicants, outstanding summonses had to be cleared first, and non-medical approvals carried a fee while medical ones were free. Check JPJ's current terms before you apply.

"The fine is a jail term." In Parliament in 2023, the Transport Minister said tint offences are dealt with by fines of RM100 to RM250, and that nobody had gone to jail for one. The film may also have to come off.

"Nobody checks." JPJ officers carry tint meters at roadblocks, along with checking road tax, insurance and the licence; our guide to police and JPJ roadblocks covers what else they look at. Tint also comes up at inspection: a car with tint over the limit can fail at Puspakom, which matters when you're selling. Puspakom inspections explained has the detail.

  • Front windscreen: a clear or very light heat-rejection film. What you want from the windscreen is less heat, not less light.
  • Front side windows: something that keeps the combined reading at 50% or more. Ask for the metered figure on your car, not the catalogue number.
  • Rear: as dark as you like for privacy, but darker rear glass makes reversing at night harder, especially in an unlit basement car park.

Heat and darkness aren't the same thing. Good films reject a lot of heat while letting through plenty of light, which is how you stay inside 70% and 50% and still get a cooler cabin.

Tint on a Grandpride car

The rental cars come as they are. Whether every car's tint is within the limits above, and who handles a tint summons on a rental, is CHECK: are all rental cars' tints within JPJ limits, and if a renter gets a tint compound, who pays it. For traffic summonses in general, who pays traffic fines on a rental car explains how they reach the driver.

If you're in the back of a chauffeur car, rear privacy is the part that matters, and rear glass has no limit. VIP chauffeur service in Kuala Lumpur covers the rest of what changes for a high-profile passenger.

On a long-term car, tint is part of keeping the car. Lease to Own customers can have detailing, including window tint, arranged under one roof with Grandpride, along with road tax and insurance. A Grandpride car subscription includes insurance, road tax and routine maintenance in the monthly price CHECK: can subscribers change the tint on a subscription car, and who pays.

Things people ask

At the back, there's no limit, so 0% VLT is legal on the rear windows of a private car. At the front, 70% on the windscreen and 50% on the front side windows are the darkest you can go without an exemption.

Do e-hailing cars follow the same rules?

Yes. When the rear limit was lifted in 2019, the change covered e-hailing cars as well as private ones, and the same front limits apply.

Can I fit dark tint and remove it before inspection?

You can, but you'd be driving with illegal tint until then, and paying for film twice. Fit legal film once.
