How much you save by settling a car loan early in Malaysia depends on which rules your loan was signed under. The Hire Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026 came into force on 1 June 2026 and moved new car loans from a flat rate to a reducing balance. Loans signed before that stay on their original terms, but the main banking associations have agreed that their members give a goodwill discount when you settle one early. Either way, the first step is the same: ask your bank for a written early settlement quotation.
This is the position as at November 2026.
Which kind of loan do you have?
Look at your hire-purchase agreement, or ask the bank.
| Signed under the old flat-rate terms | Signed under the reducing-balance rules | |
|---|---|---|
| How interest works | Fixed total interest, worked out at the start on the whole amount | Charged on the principal you still owe |
| What early settlement saves | A rebate on the unearned interest, worked out under the Rule of 78, plus any goodwill discount your bank gives | Interest stops on the principal you've repaid, so there's no unearned interest to argue about |
| What you get on paper | A settlement figure when you ask | An effective interest rate and a repayment schedule from the start |
Don't assume a loan signed after 1 June 2026 is on the new rules. Only some providers were ready on that day: the remaining banks have until 31 December 2026 to switch over, and other hire-purchase providers until 31 March 2027.
Old flat-rate loans: the Rule of 78 and goodwill discounts
Under the Rule of 78, more of the interest is counted as earned in the early months of the loan than in the later ones. So if you settle in year four of a nine-year loan, the rebate is smaller than a simple "years left divided by years total" sum would suggest.
To narrow that gap, banks in the ABM, AIBIM and ADFIM associations have agreed to give a goodwill discount to borrowers who settle older fixed-rate loans early. The aim is to bring your balance closer to what the reducing-balance method would have produced. Each bank works out its own discount, and you're told the figure when you apply.
You won't qualify if the account is more than 90 days in arrears, under legal action or a repossession order, or being restructured, rescheduled or handled under a formal debt management programme.
New reducing-balance loans
These are simpler. You pay interest only on what you still owe, so paying it off early stops the interest on the rest. As reported when the rules took effect, settling early under the new method carries no penalty. Ask the bank to confirm whether any fee applies on your account before you pay.
How to ask for your settlement figure
- Call or visit your bank and ask for an early settlement quotation for your hire-purchase account, in writing.
- For an older loan, ask that it shows the goodwill discount as a separate line.
- Note the date the quotation is valid until. The figure changes as interest accrues and instalments go through.
- Pay the exact amount before that date, by the method the bank tells you.
- Ask for written confirmation that the loan is fully settled, and for the bank's claim on the car to be released. Until that's done, the bank is still the owner on paper. Our guide to settling a car loan and the ownership claim covers this step.
If you're settling because you're selling the car, the buyer's money normally pays the bank directly. Our guide to selling a car in Malaysia explains the order.
Settlement questions
Is early settlement worth it on a flat-rate loan?
Ask for the quotation and compare it with the instalments you'd still pay. The later you are in the loan, the less interest is left to save, even with a goodwill discount. If the same money could clear a credit card balance instead, that usually carries the higher interest, so pay it off first.
Does settling early help my next loan application?
Once the loan is settled, its instalment no longer counts in your debt service ratio when you next apply for credit. Our guide to car loan eligibility explains how banks look at DSR.
What if I can't keep up the instalments at all?
Talk to the bank before you fall behind; accounts more than 90 days in arrears are excluded from the goodwill discount. AKPK, set up by Bank Negara, gives free advice and runs a debt management programme. Never hand the car to someone to "continue paying" for you: that's sambung bayar, and it's illegal.
For your next car, there are routes that don't involve a bank loan. Grandpride Subscription is a monthly fee for a car Grandpride owns, with no loan and no down payment, so it doesn't affect your bank DSR. Lease to Own has terms of 12 to 36 months with a down payment, decided in-house without a bank, and the car is yours at the end CHECK: lawyer to confirm how the lease-to-own contract is structured. Our comparison of subscription, lease and hire purchase sets them side by side.
