In hire purchase vs lease, the difference is ownership. On hire purchase you buy the car in instalments and it's yours after the last payment. On a lease you pay to use a car someone else owns, and hand it back. A car subscription is a third way: one monthly price covers the car, insurance, road tax and maintenance, and you return it at the end. If you want to keep the car for years, hire purchase or lease to own. If you need one for a year or two and don't want a loan, subscribe.
This is general information. For your own numbers, talk to your bank, an accountant or a lawyer.

Hire purchase (sewa beli)
A car loan in Malaysia is usually a hire-purchase agreement under the Hire-Purchase Act 1967. A bank or finance company buys the car and you repay it in instalments; until the last one, the financier is the legal owner and you're the hirer. You put down a deposit and finance the rest, after the lender has looked at your income, commitments and credit record. Insurance, road tax and servicing are yours to pay, and financiers generally require comprehensive insurance for the life of the agreement. At the end the car is yours, and so is whatever it's worth by then.
The interest rules changed in 2026. Amendments in force from 1 June 2026 replace the old flat-rate and Rule of 78 calculation with a reducing-balance method for new agreements, with some providers given until 31 March 2027 to switch. Ask your lender which method yours uses and what early settlement would cost. Hire purchase is a loan, so it counts as a commitment the next time you apply for credit. Over the years it adds up to more than the instalment; our guide to the cost of owning a car in Malaysia does the sums.
It suits you if you want the car for many years, don't mind handling insurance, road tax and servicing yourself, and qualify for bank financing on terms you're happy with.
A lease, and lease to own
On a straight lease you pay a regular rental to use a car for a set term, the lessor owns it throughout, and you return it at the end. Leases are common for company cars and many cap how far you can drive each year. A lease may cost less a month than a subscription for a fixed car, so compare what each monthly figure includes.
Lease to own is the version where the car becomes yours when the term ends. Grandpride runs one, the Grandpride Certified Lease to Own programme: you sign with a down payment, pay over 12 to 36 months, and own the car when the term is complete. No bank loan is involved, decisions are made in-house, and there's no mileage limit CHECK: lawyer to confirm how the lease-to-own contract is structured, who is the registered owner during the term, and when ownership transfers. Lease to own in Malaysia explains it in full, and the details are on the Lease to Own page.
It suits you if you want to own the car without a bank, over a shorter term, with no limit on distance.
Subscription
From a distance it looks like a lease: someone else owns the car and you pay monthly. The difference is what the monthly figure covers and how easily you can change your mind. With a Grandpride Subscription, Grandpride owns the car and one price includes insurance, road tax, routine maintenance and roadside assistance. You pay for fuel, and a small fee above your monthly mileage package unless you take unlimited. There's no down payment, it isn't a loan, and Grandpride lists it as not affecting your bank DSR. Swap to a similar car when your needs change; the longer the term, the lower the monthly price. Car subscription in Malaysia has the published prices.
It suits you if you want a car for a year or two rather than a decade, would rather not take on a loan, and like everything in one monthly price. It's the wrong choice if you want something to keep at the end.
Or none of them yet
For weeks or a few months, just rent. The rental fleet is online, and daily, weekly and monthly car rental explains longer bookings.

Whichever you choose, before you sign:
- What's the total over the whole term, down payment included?
- What if I want to stop early, and what does it cost?
- What happens if a payment is late or missed?
- Who insures the car, and what's the excess on a claim?
- Is there a mileage limit, and what's charged above it?
- Who owns the car during the term, and when does that change?
And walk away from anyone offering to let you take over someone else's car loan informally. That's sambung bayar, an offence under the Hire-Purchase Act 1967, and our guide to the risks of sambung bayar explains who ends up paying.
