Genting Premium Outlets is halfway up the hill, not at the top, which makes it the easiest part of Genting to drive to. It's an open-air designer outlet next to Sky Sentral, the base station of the Awana SkyWay cable car, with around 150 stores open from 10 am to 10 pm every day. From KL you take the KL–Karak Expressway, turn off at Genting Sempah, climb the Genting road to the mid-hill, and park in the outlet's own car park.
Which way suits your day
If it's two or three of you with a shopping list, drive yourself. The outlets are an hour or so from KL with clear roads, and you'll want a boot. An SUV such as the Maserati Levante at RM 3,300 a day takes the bags and sits comfortably on the climb.
If you also want the casino, the theme park or the cooler air at the top, park at the outlets and take the cable car. Resorts World Genting itself suggests leaving your car in the Premium Outlets car park, which adjoins Sky Sentral, and riding the Awana SkyWay up. It's about ten minutes to the top, with a stop at Chin Swee on the way, and runs from 7 am to 11 pm. You skip the last part of the climb and the summit car parks. Our guide to the Genting cable car versus driving up weighs the two side by side.
If nobody wants to drive a mountain road, or you're a family group, book a chauffeur by the hour. A shopping day is open-ended, and an hourly booking (anywhere from 3 to 23 hours) means the car waits while you shop. A Toyota Vellfire with a driver costs from RM 150 an hour, seats seven and takes three large suitcases, which is a lot of shopping bags. Grandpride also has a flat fare to Genting CHECK: whether the Genting flat fare covers a drop-off at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets at mid-hill. Chauffeur bookings made online need at least two days' notice.
If you're flying in and heading straight up, see our KLIA to Genting transfer guide before you plan a shopping stop on the way.
The drive up
The route is simple. From the city, get onto the KL–Karak Expressway (E8) and stay on it past the Gombak toll plaza to the Genting Sempah exit. From there the Genting road climbs through Gohtong Jaya to the outlets and Sky Sentral.
Three things to know:
- The road up has its own charge. Since 28 May 2026, the Genting road collects a charge electronically as you enter at Genting Sempah or the Gohtong Jaya roundabout. Rates are set by the road's operator and can change CHECK: how the Genting road charge is billed and passed on for a Grandpride rental car.
- It's a proper mountain road. It's steep, with tight bends, and the cloud can come down to the road. Our guide to driving up to Genting Highlands covers the climb and, more importantly, the descent.
- Weekends are slow. The stretch from Gombak to Genting Sempah backs up on Saturdays, Sundays and before holidays, so a weekday visit is calmer.
A day trip from PJ to Genting and back is roughly 120 to 140 km. Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, so add the 50 km package when you book. Tolls on the Karak are electronic only; the Touch 'n Go card you add when booking covers them, as long as you load enough.
Good to know before the drive
What are the Genting Premium Outlets opening hours?
10 am to 10 pm, every day, as the outlet lists them. Check its own site around public holidays.
Can I take the cable car from Genting Premium Outlets?
Yes. Sky Sentral, where the Awana SkyWay starts, is next door and connected by pedestrian bridges. The cable car runs from 7 am to 11 pm.
How far is Genting Premium Outlets from KL?
Allow about an hour from central KL with no jams, and more from PJ or at weekends. The outlets are on the way up, so you're there before the summit.
Is it cold?
Cooler than KL, and often misty. Genting is wettest around November, and the outlet is open-air, so bring a light layer and an umbrella.
