A JPJ blacklist check takes a few minutes online, and it's the first thing to do when MyJPJ won't let you renew your road tax. A blacklist is a status JPJ or the police put on your name or your vehicle, usually over unpaid summonses, and while it's there you can't renew road tax, renew your licence or transfer the car. The steps below find it, clear it and get the status lifted, as the process stands in November 2026.
Check
- Start with JPJ. Log in to MySIKAP at jpjportal.jpj.gov.my, or open the MyJPJ app, and look up summonses and blacklist status by your IC number or the car's plate. Camera summonses from AES and AWAS show up here.
- Then check the police. PDRM summonses are separate: look them up on MyBayar PDRM (website or app), where you log in with MyDigital ID. A road tax renewal needs you clear of blacklists from both JPJ and PDRM.
- If the apps don't agree with what you know, or you need proof on paper, go in person. A JPJ office, a traffic police station or a PDRM district traffic headquarters can print the official record.
Our guide to checking traffic summonses online walks through each app.
Understand what you found
- Work out where each item came from. The usual causes are unpaid JPJ or PDRM summonses, including camera summonses, and court cases that haven't been settled. Some offences can't be settled by paying a compound at all, such as driving without insurance or without valid road tax; those go to court.
- Look at the dates. Since 1 January 2026, JPJ and PDRM summonses follow the same schedule: 50% off if you pay within 15 days, 33% off between day 16 and day 30, the full amount from day 31 to day 60, and after that the case can go to court and end in a blacklist. The one-off discount campaigns of earlier years have ended.
- Watch for old ones. Summonses you paid years ago sometimes still show as unpaid, particularly older PDRM ones. Find the receipt before you pay twice.
Clear
- Pay each active summons through MyBayar PDRM, MySIKAP or MyJPJ, through an agent such as MyEG, or at a counter. Pay the JPJ ones and the PDRM ones separately; settling one doesn't touch the other.
- If a summons has gone to court, follow the court notice: attend, or pay the compound the way it tells you to.
- Keep every receipt. For old or disputed cases, ask JPJ for written confirmation that the matter is settled.
Get it lifted
- Wait 24 to 72 hours for the systems to update, then check again.
- If the status hasn't changed after three days, take your receipts to a JPJ office and ask for the blacklist to be removed manually.
- Renew. Road tax can be renewed up to two months before expiry, and it needs active insurance as well as a clean status. Our guide to road tax renewal covers the rest.
Points are a separate record from the blacklist. A paid summons can still carry KEJARA demerit points, and on a probationary licence more than 20 points cancels it. Our guide to KEJARA demerit points explains the scale.
Quick answers
Can I renew my driving licence while blacklisted?
No. A blacklist blocks licence renewal as well as road tax renewal, ownership transfers and some Puspakom transactions. Clear it first.
How long does it take to remove a JPJ blacklist?
Once everything's paid, allow 24 to 72 hours for the systems to update. If it's still there after three days, go to JPJ with the receipts.
Can a summons from a rental car get me blacklisted?
A camera summons for a rental car goes first to the registered owner, the rental company, which can name the driver to the authorities. Once it's in your name, it's your summons to pay, and unpaid ones follow the same path as any other. Our guide on who pays traffic fines on a rental car explains how they're traced. On a Grandpride rental, only the named renter drives, so the driver on record is you.
I'm selling my car and the buyer's check shows a blacklist. What now?
The transfer will be rejected until it's cleared, so do steps 1 to 11 before the sale. Our Puspakom inspection guide covers the inspection that comes with a used-car transfer.
If your own car can't be taxed while you sort it out, a rental by the day keeps you driving, and you can ask us about longer terms.
