Road tax renewal online, without the failed payment

Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG First Edition

Road tax renewal online takes a few minutes in the MyJPJ app, as long as the groundwork is done: your motor insurance is active and JPJ can see it, neither the car nor its owner is blacklisted by JPJ or PDRM, and you're within two months of the expiry date. When a renewal fails, the usual reasons are on that list rather than in the payment.

The steps are as at 2026. JPJ changes its systems often, so if a screen looks different from what's described here, follow the app.

Do these first

  1. Renew the insurance. Road tax can't be renewed without an active policy, and the government's own guidance lists a minimum of one year of cover. Make sure the policy is issued rather than only quoted, and that the plate number and owner details are right. If you've only just paid, give the insurer time to send the cover note to JPJ before you try.
  2. Clear the summonses. Unpaid JPJ or PDRM summonses can block a renewal, and one left unpaid for 60 days may be referred to court and lead to a blacklisting. Check JPJ's in MyJPJ and PDRM's separately in MyBayar PDRM. Our guide to checking traffic summonses online shows where.
  3. Check the date. The road tax, properly the motor vehicle licence (LKM), can be renewed from two months before it expires. Try earlier and the app turns you down.
  4. Look at how long it has lapsed. If the road tax hasn't been renewed for more than three years, the car must pass a Puspakom inspection before JPJ will renew it. Some vehicles, such as commercial ones, need an inspection anyway. Our guide to Puspakom inspections explains the types.

Renewing in MyJPJ

Log in as the registered owner, pick the vehicle and choose the LKM renewal. The app should pick up your insurance on its own; if it doesn't, stop and go back to step 1 rather than retrying the payment. Choose the period, pay, and the new e-LKM appears against the vehicle in the app.

Other ways in: Pos Malaysia's post offices handle road tax together with insurance, and a JPJ branch deals with the cases the app can't.

No sticker, no slip

Since 2023 the digital e-LKM has replaced the paper road tax sticker, and a private car doesn't need to display one; commercial vehicles are the exception. From 1 February 2026 JPJ stopped printing optional road tax slips for Malaysian-owned private vehicles, because enforcement officers check validity on their own systems. Cars owned by non-Malaysians can still get a printed slip.

Electric cars pay again from 2026

The road tax exemption for electric cars ended on 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, battery electric cars pay road tax based on motor power in kilowatts, using the combined output where there's more than one motor, so a dual-motor car usually pays more than its single-motor sister. Plug-in hybrids are still charged on engine capacity. The new rate applies at your first renewal in 2026, and the app shows the exact figure before you pay. Our guide to EV running costs in Malaysia puts it in context with charging and insurance.

When road tax isn't your job

On a Grandpride car subscription, road tax is in the monthly price and Grandpride's team renews it, along with insurance and routine servicing. On Lease to Own, road tax and insurance are arranged in-house, separately from the lease itself. On a rental car, road tax is the owner's job, not the renter's. If you're weighing that against owning outright, our guide to the cost of owning a car in Malaysia lists the rest.

Quick answers

Can I renew road tax online if my insurance has expired?

No. Renew the insurance first, wait for it to reach JPJ, then renew the road tax.

Do I need to print or display my road tax?

Not for a Malaysian-owned private car. The e-LKM in MyJPJ is the record, and officers check it digitally.

Boleh renew road tax awal?

Boleh, tetapi hanya dalam tempoh dua bulan sebelum tarikh tamat. Pastikan insurans sudah aktif dahulu.
