KL to Batu Pahat by car, and back through Muar

KL to Batu Pahat is about 250 km by car and a little under three hours in normal traffic, nearly all of it on the North–South Expressway. Batu Pahat, BP for short, is a working river town on the Strait of Malacca coast, known more for its food than its sights. It's a long day trip and a relaxed overnight one, and it pairs well with Muar, the next town up the coast.

The drive down, in order

Leave PJ on the expressway south. The first hour is the Klang Valley thinning out past Nilai and Seremban; after that the road runs through oil palm, with Melaka off to the west around Ayer Keroh. That's the obvious breakfast stop, about halfway.

The exit for BP is Ayer Hitam. Leave the expressway there and Federal Route 50 runs west to the coast, through Parit Raja, into Batu Pahat. Before you turn off, Ayer Hitam itself has Arena Warna, a market for handicrafts and local snacks, and a little south, Yong Peng has the Fortune Dragon, a dragon-shaped tunnel about 115 metres long.

Route 50 ends at the Mount Soga junction in Batu Pahat, where it meets the coast road.

In Batu Pahat

Tourism Johor's own list is long. The things that fit a day:

  • Dataran Penggaram, the town square, with the big sculpture of a chisel on a rock that gives BP its name ("batu pahat" is "chiselled stone").
  • The old commercial streets, restored shophouses with cafés, and the murals around Jalan Ibrahim.
  • Laman Shah Bandar, the riverside park, and the Yok BP river cruise if you want to see the mangroves from the water.
  • Galeri Dato' Onn, a gallery about Onn Jaafar, a key figure in Malaysia's independence.
  • Pantai Minyak Beku, about 10 km south, a small beach with a local legend about soldiers who chiselled the rocks for water and found oil instead.
  • Pantai Punggur, about 30 km south, for sunset and seafood.

The food is the reason most people drive this far. BP is known for nasi briyani, Johor style, and the dish is said to have started here. Also on Tourism Johor's list: mee racun, a spicy tomato-based noodle with beef bone marrow, and asam pedas cooked over a wood fire. For hawker food in the evening, the hawker centre on the riverbank by the Batu Pahat jetty serves oyster omelette, prawn cakes and grilled stingray.

Back through Muar

Instead of returning the way you came, go up the coast. Federal Route 5 leaves BP to the north, through Parit Jawa, and runs into Muar. Muar is a food town too, with its own long list; our KL to Muar food trip has it. From Muar, rejoin the expressway northbound for KL. The loop gives you a second town's lunch on the way home. Route 5 is an ordinary trunk road and slower than the expressway, so plan to drive it in daylight.

Day trip or overnight

BP and back is about 500 km and close to six hours in the car. With Muar on the way home, it's a full day. If you have the time, stay one night: the evening river stalls and a briyani breakfast are hard to fit into a day trip.

Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day. Pick the add-on for the plan:

PlanRough distanceIncludedChoose
Day trip, BP onlyabout 500 km120 kmUnlimited
Overnight, BP and Muarover 500 km240 kmUnlimited
Two nights, BP and Muarover 500 km360 km+100 km a day (660 km)

Unlimited costs less per kilometre than paying the car's per-km rate after the trip. Bring the car back with the fuel at the level you collected it, and load a Touch 'n Go card (RM 50 to RM 500) for the tolls. Only the named renter may drive, so on a day trip one person does all six hours; that's one more reason to stay over.

Which car

A highway run with two or three people doesn't need much. A sedan with a decent boot handles the food you'll bring home; the sedan list has everything from the Honda Civic RS to the BMW 3 Series. If you'd rather not drive at all, a Grandpride chauffeur can do it, and our guide to a private driver from KL to other cities explains how a trip this long is priced. Going further south? KL to Johor Bahru by car carries on down the same expressway.
