KL to JB by car is about 330 to 350 km, depending on where you start in the Klang Valley and where in Johor Bahru you're going. Allow about four hours with one stop, longer on a Friday evening or the start of a school holiday. Nearly all of it is one road, the North–South Expressway's southern route (E2). One thing to settle before you go: a Grandpride rental can drive anywhere in Johor, but it can't cross into Singapore.
Out of the Klang Valley
From PJ or central KL you join the E2 heading south past Sungai Besi and Seri Kembangan. The first full rest area is Seremban, roughly 35 km down the expressway. Skip it unless someone needs it: you've only just started. Fill up before you leave instead.
After Seremban there's a lay-by and a vista point at Pedas Linggi if you want to stretch your legs without stopping for long.
Ayer Keroh, the Melaka stop
About 100 km from the start of the expressway, Ayer Keroh has a restaurant built on a bridge over the highway, used from both directions. It's the obvious coffee stop, and the exit for Melaka is right there. If you've got time to spare, a couple of hours in Melaka breaks up the trip; our KL to Melaka day trip guide covers where to park.
The long middle: Pagoh to Machap
After Melaka the expressway runs through plantation country, long and fairly straight, past Tangkak and Yong Peng. Pagoh rest area is roughly halfway between KL and JB, and Machap comes about 60 km after it.
Long, straight and samey is where tiredness creeps in. On a Grandpride self-drive car only the named renter may drive, so you can't hand over the keys at Pagoh. Stop properly at one of these two, eat something, and walk around for ten minutes.
Into Johor Bahru
Near the end, the Senai North interchange connects to the Second Link Expressway. That's your turn for Johor Premium Outlets at Indahpura, which sits right at that junction, and for the road west towards Legoland (see our KL to Legoland Malaysia guide). For JB city, carry on: Skudai, the last rest area, comes a moment later, then the Skudai toll plaza, where the closed toll system ends, and the expressway runs on into town.
In town, the Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple makes a good short stop: about 90% of the interior is covered in coloured glass, some 300,000 pieces of it. Further east, the coast road leads on towards Desaru.
Where the car can't go
Both border crossings, the Causeway in JB and the Second Link at Tuas, lead to Singapore, and Grandpride rental cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia. If Singapore is the destination, drop the idea of driving across; our guide on taking a Malaysian rental car to Singapore explains why it isn't possible and the train and flight options instead.
Mileage for a JB trip
Every rental includes 120 km a day, and you can add 50 km or 100 km a day, or take unlimited. JB and back is about 700 km before you drive anywhere in town.
| Trip | Rough distance | Included | Best option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend, 2 days | about 750 km | 240 km | Unlimited |
| Three days | about 800 km | 360 km | Unlimited (+100 a day gives 660 km, still short) |
| One-way to JB | about 350 km | 120 km a day | Unlimited, and ask about returning the car |
Paying for extra kilometres after the trip, at the car's per-km rate, is the most expensive way to do it. A sedan suits four hours of expressway: the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG is RM 1,400 a day for a quick one, the BMW 530i RM 800 a day for a calmer one, and every sedan is on the sedan list. Add a Touch 'n Go card with the keys, loaded with anything from RM 50 to RM 500, and load towards the top for a run this long. Return the car with the same fuel level it left with.
