KL to Kota Bharu by car is about 440 km, and it takes around six and a half hours of driving if you don't stop much and get out of KL without a jam. Most of it is one road, Federal Route 8, through the interior of Pahang and Kelantan by way of Gua Musang. Leave early, drive it in daylight and plan one long stop in the middle.
The road, in order
PJ to Bentong: the expressway part
From PJ, head for the KL–Karak Expressway and drive east through the Genting Sempah tunnel into Pahang. This is the stretch that jams on the eve of a long weekend or a festive holiday, between Gombak and Genting Sempah, so an early start pays off most here. The Touch 'n Go card goes on the tolls at Gombak and Bentong; the Karak takes electronic payment only.
Route 8 begins at Bentong, at its interchange with the expressway (exit 810). From here to Kota Bharu it's about 400 km of trunk road. If you'd like a night out of KL before the long part, KL to Bentong by car covers the town and its food.
Bentong to Kuala Lipis
The road runs north past Raub along the eastern foothills of the Titiwangsa range. The Bentong to Raub section was bypassed by a wider two-lane road back in 1958, and it's the easiest part of Route 8. Lentang Forest Reserve sits on this first stretch if anyone needs a leg-stretch among trees. Kuala Lipis is the next town of any size and a reasonable place for a mid-morning break.
Kuala Lipis to Gua Musang: the long middle
This is the remote part. The road follows the western foothills of the Tahan range and the towns are further apart. Fill up when you pass a station with the tank below half rather than counting on the next one. Gua Musang is the natural lunch stop.
Take the animals seriously. Near Chegar Perah the old alignment was moved onto the new Central Spine Road to cut accidents involving animals and sharp corners, and you're redirected onto it before rejoining Route 8. Bends and animals on an unlit trunk road are the reason to drive this part in daylight, and to overtake only where you can see well ahead.
Gua Musang to Kota Bharu
North of Gua Musang the road follows the valley down through Kuala Krai and Machang. The last section, from Kuala Krai into Kota Bharu, is well known for heavy congestion, so allow extra time and arrive with patience left.
The other way: along the coast
You can also drive the East Coast Expressway all the way to Kuala Terengganu, about 435 km of mostly expressway, then go north on the coast road, Highway 3, to Kota Bharu. It's a longer distance in total, and it makes sense if you want a night in Terengganu or Kuantan on the way. You could drive up one way and back the other. Our KL to Terengganu guide covers the expressway half.
In Kota Bharu
Kota Bharu is Kelantan's capital, near the mouth of the Kelantan River. Start at Pasar Siti Khadijah, the best-known market in town, where most of the sellers are women; go hungry. Eat nasi kerabu, the blue rice, and nasi dagang, and try nasi berlauk and the kuih. The Muhammadi Mosque and the Kelantan Museum are in the centre, the old royal palaces can be seen from outside but are closed to visitors, and Pantai Cahaya Bulan is the best-known beach nearby.
Mileage, fuel and the car
Kota Bharu and back is close to 900 km before you drive anywhere in town. A Grandpride day rate includes 120 km, nowhere near enough, so take unlimited mileage when you book; it costs less per kilometre than paying the car's own rate afterwards. Bring the car back with the same fuel level it left with.
For two days of trunk road, a comfortable SUV beats a sports car. The Mercedes-Benz GLC250 4Matic at RM 1,700 a day has five seats, all-wheel drive and room for bags; the SUV list has bigger options.
Three rules shape the trip. Only the named renter drives, so six and a half hours each way is on one person; that alone is a reason to break the drive with a night in Gua Musang or on the coast. The car stays in Peninsular Malaysia, so no hop across into southern Thailand. And if nobody wants to drive it at all, a chauffeur can take you one way, priced on distance; our guide to a private driver from KL to other cities explains how.
