Kuala Kubu Bharu: five things people get wrong about KKB

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

For a lot of drivers, Kuala Kubu Bharu is where you fill the tank before the Fraser's Hill road. It deserves a day of its own. KKB, the district capital of Hulu Selangor, is about 60 km north of Kuala Lumpur, roughly an hour up the North–South Expressway, and it has a planned 1920s town, a dam, white water on the Selangor River and a paragliding hill. These are the things people tend to get wrong about it.

"It's just the way to Fraser's Hill"

The town itself is the first surprise. The old settlement, Kuala Kubu, was flooded when a dam on the Selangor River broke in 1883, and again in 1926, when the flood swept most of the town away. The British rebuilt it on higher ground. Charles Crompton Reade, the first government town planner of the Federated Malay States, laid out the new town in 1925, and it's often described as Asia's first garden township.

Park and walk the old streets, which still have their pre-war buildings. Look for the King George VI memorial clock tower, the street art that tells the town's history, and the old fire station from 1931, now the Hulu Selangor tourist information centre, which is the obvious first stop for what's open that day.

Fraser's Hill is still up the road, and if that's your plan, our guide to driving to Fraser's Hill covers the climb from The Gap.

"You can turn up at the waterfall any day"

Not reliably. Sungai Chiling, a three-tier waterfall in the forests of north-east Selangor with a suspension bridge over the river, is the best-known spot near KKB, and it has spent long spells closed. The local council shut the area from August to December 2025 for upgrades, and in recent years the Selangor Forestry Department has closed recreation in its forest reserves over the year-end monsoon; in 2025 that ran from mid-November to the end of January. Some forest reserve trips also need a permit from the department.

So check the Selangor Forestry Department's notices before you drive up, and plan a day that still works if Chiling is shut. Bukit Kutu, a 1,050 m hill once called Treacher's Hill, has the same rules: a permit from the forestry department, and a hike of two to four hours from an Orang Asli village at the foot.

"There's nothing to do at the dam"

The Selangor Dam, on the river above the town, is a calm place to stop and look at the water, and on a clear night it's a spot for stargazing, away from city light.

The river below the dam is where KKB's white-water rafting runs: guided group trips along a stretch of about 8 km with proper rapids. Operators set the times and decide whether the river is safe to run on the day, so book ahead and expect to get wet. Bring a change of clothes and something to sit on in the car.

"Paragliding needs experience"

It doesn't, for a tandem flight. The KKB Paragliding Park, open since 2014, flies tandem: you're strapped to an experienced pilot, launch from a hill about 427 m up and fly with the town below you. Flights depend on the wind, so take the operator's call on the day and have a back-up plan.

"Any exit will do"

Coming from KL on the North–South Expressway, the exits signposted for Kuala Kubu Bharu and Bukit Fraser are Lembah Beringin (exit 120) and Tanjung Malim (exit 121). Lembah Beringin is the first of the two. After the toll, follow the signs into town. If you're carrying on towards Fraser's Hill, fill up in town before the climb.

Booking the car

A compact SUV suits the day: the dam road and the road towards Chiling wind through forest, and wet gear goes in the boot. The Toyota Harrier costs RM 700 a day. Our guide to Toyota Harrier rental in KL has more on how it drives, and you can compare every SUV in the fleet.

Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day.

PlanRoughly from PJWhat to book

Quick answers

How far is Kuala Kubu Bharu from KL?

About 60 km north of Kuala Lumpur, around an hour by car on the North–South Expressway.

Is Sungai Chiling open?

It has closed for long periods, for facility upgrades and during the monsoon. Check the Selangor Forestry Department's latest notice, and its permit rules, before you go.

Can I go white-water rafting in KKB as a beginner?

Rafting here is run by guided operators as group trips, but the rapids are real. Ask the operator about the river level on your date and any age or swimming requirements.
