Tanjung Sepat by car, down the Selangor coast

Tanjung Sepat is a small fishing town on the Selangor coast, facing the Straits of Malacca, about 95 km from central KL. By car it's around an hour and a half, and it makes a good Tanjung Sepat day trip: pau for breakfast, a walk past the boats, seafood for lunch and a slow drive back along the coast.

Out of the city

From Petaling Jaya or KL, head south-west on the ELITE or the SKVE (South Klang Valley Expressway), then follow the signs for Banting and the coast. Both routes are tolled, so have your Touch 'n Go card loaded.

Leave early. Several of the breakfast places in Tanjung Sepat close by late morning, and the town gets busy on weekends, when tour buses arrive. A weekday morning start is the easy version.

Morib, then the coast road

Before Tanjung Sepat you reach Morib, about 77 km from KL. There's a beach and plenty of parking, so it's a fair place to stretch your legs.

From Morib the coast road (Federal Route 5) runs south, flat and mostly straight, through Batu Laut. Watch for uneven patches where lorries have worn the surface, and for debris on the shoulder; both are hard on low-profile tyres. It's under 20 km from Morib to Tanjung Sepat.

Tanjung Sepat itself

The town comes in two halves, Tanjung Sepat Darat inland and Tanjung Sepat Laut by the sea; a police station and a simple arch mark the turning for the sea side. It's a grid of streets, many old wooden houses with tin roofs, and a river where the fishing boats tie up.

What to eat, roughly in order of the day:

  1. Pau. Steamed buns are what Tanjung Sepat is known for, and people drive down on holidays just to buy them. Several family shops make them on site, with fillings from pork to yam, salted fish and kaya.
  2. Coffee. Beans are roasted locally, the old way, and you can buy a bag or drink it kopitiam-style.
  3. Seafood. The open-air restaurants on stilts along the shore are the reason for a long lunch. Seafood steamboat is the town's best-known dish, and seafood bak kut teh is the other one to look for.

The Lovers' Bridge

This is the one people search for, and the story is untidy. The original wooden jetty, a sunset spot for couples, collapsed in June 2013 while officials were inspecting it. A rebuild started in 2015, and reports since then disagree about what stands there now. Some describe a rebuilt bridge that's busy with photographers and wedding shoots; a Selangor tourism guide describes the old bridge as gone, with a cultural street in its place, murals, a wishing tree and two nearby bridges for photos.

Before you plan a sunset around it, look at recent photos posted by visitors so you know what you're driving to.

On the way back

Two stops on the edge of town are easy to add. A dragon fruit farm lets visitors join the harvest, best in June when the fruit blooms and ripens. A mushroom farm shop sells fresh and dried mushrooms, including lingzhi, and explains how they're grown. If you'd rather end at a beach, Pantai Cunang, on the outskirts behind an Orang Asli village, is a white-sand stretch.

For the drive home, the coast road back through Morib and Banting is the slower, prettier choice; the highways are quicker. For another coastal Selangor drive, this time an evening one north of KL, see our guide to Kuala Selangor's fireflies by car.

The car and the mileage

A flat coast road and a slow lunch suit an open car. The Mercedes-Benz SLK 250, a two-seat convertible, costs RM 1,000 a day; put the roof up for the highway and down for the coast road. Our guide to convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur compares the open cars. With family in the back, a seven-seater is better; see the vehicle list.

Tanjung Sepat di mana?

Tanjung Sepat terletak di daerah Kuala Langat, Selangor, di pantai Selat Melaka, kira-kira 95 km dari pusat bandar Kuala Lumpur dan 20 minit dari Pantai Morib.

Is Tanjung Sepat good for a day trip?

Yes. It's close enough that you don't need a night, and the town is small enough to see on foot in a few hours. The best version starts early and finishes with lunch by the water.
