Convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur: which of the three to take

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 3 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

BMW Z4

For convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur, Grandpride has three open-top cars, and all three are two-seaters: the Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 at RM 1,000 a day, the BMW Z4 at RM 1,500 and the Mitsuoka Rock Star at RM 1,900. Whichever you take, plan to have the roof down early in the morning or after sunset. KL's midday sun and afternoon storms aren't kind to an open car.

Which one we'd pick

If you want the easiest weekend, take the SLK. The roof folds into the boot at the press of a button, and closed, the cabin is calm enough for a long highway run. It's the one that suits the most kinds of trip.

If you like driving for its own sake, take the Z4. It feels tighter and keener on a winding road, and it's the one to book for an early run up to the hills before the traffic builds.

If the car is part of the occasion, take the Rock Star. You don't see many on Malaysian roads. The long nose, rounded wings and chrome look like another decade, and it photographs well. If you're planning pictures around it, our guide to car rental for a photoshoot in Kuala Lumpur covers the practical side.

If there are more than two of you, none of these. All three seat two, and the boots are small: a weekend bag each, and less when a hard top is folded away. Airport runs with suitcases are out too.

The Mustang question

Plenty of people search for a Mustang convertible. Grandpride's two Mustangs, the 2.3 EcoBoost and the 5.0 V8, are listed in the fleet as coupés, not convertibles. If four seats matter more than open sky, the Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost at RM 1,400 a day keeps some of the same feel. Our guide to sports car rental in Kuala Lumpur covers both Mustangs and the rest of the sports cars. Otherwise, for four people, look at a coupé or a limousine.

Roof down in KL weather

KL is warm all year with strong sun in the middle of the day, and heavy showers, often in the afternoon or evening, can roll in quickly.

  • Open before mid-morning and after sunset. At midday, close it and run the air-conditioning.
  • When the sky darkens, find somewhere safe to stop and close the roof. Some roofs only move at a standstill and others work up to a modest speed, so learn how yours works before you set off. Ask for a demonstration when you take the keys CHECK: is a roof demonstration given at handover?.
  • Park with the roof closed. The seats stay cooler, the cabin stays dry and your things stay out of sight. Leather left in the sun gets hot, so pick shade where there is some.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a cap that won't blow off.
  • On hazy days, keep it shut. An open roof is no fun when the air is bad.

If rain does get in, dry the cabin as soon as you can and tell the team when you return the car CHECK: is there a cleaning or damage charge if rain gets into a convertible's cabin?. Our guide to driving in monsoon season has more on KL's afternoon storms.

Where to drive it, and the mileage that needs

The best convertible days start early and leave the city. The highlands give you climbing roads and cool air that needs no air-conditioning; a Genting day trip is short enough that +50 km a day usually covers it. Putrajaya's wide boulevards and bridges are quiet on a weekend morning and close to PJ. Port Dickson is about 100 km each way, so a coastal day comes to around 200 km: the included 120 km won't do, so add +100 km a day or take unlimited, which costs less per kilometre than paying for extra distance afterwards. Our rental mileage and toll card guide works through other routes, and a Touch 'n Go card loaded with RM 50 to RM 500 can come with the keys.

Booking

Choose your dates first on the convertible list: a car already booked shows as not available, and each car's own page greys out the days it's taken. Then pick protection, mileage and toll card, and the price updates as you go. Grandpride Protection+ takes the excess to zero on damage and theft, glass and tyres included; rental car insurance and excess explains each level.

We deliver anywhere in the Klang Valley, free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom, or you collect in store. A RM 50 booking fee is paid online and comes off the total; the rest you pay in store or in person. Only the named renter drives, and the car goes back with the fuel level it left with. What you need to bring is confirmed when you reserve CHECK: minimum age, licence and ID requirements, and the deposit amount and refund time for each convertible. How renting with us works has the rest.
