Car insurance renewal in Malaysia comes once a year, and it has to happen before your road tax: JPJ won't renew road tax without motor insurance covering the period. Before you pay the renewal notice, spend ten minutes on six checks. Premiums have been set by each insurer since motor pricing was liberalised in 2016 and 2017, and the cheapest policy for your car isn't always the one your current insurer sends.
The rules below are as at November 2026.
1. The type of cover
There are three:
| Cover | Pays for damage you cause to others | Fire and theft of your car | Damage to your car in an accident |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third party | Yes | No | No |
| Third party, fire and theft | Yes | Yes | No |
| Comprehensive | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Third-party cover is the legal minimum. If the car is on a hire-purchase loan, the financier will generally insist on comprehensive cover for the whole loan. For an older, low-value car you own outright, third party, fire and theft can be a sensible saving.
2. The sum insured: market value or agreed value
This line decides what you get if the car is stolen or written off.
- Market value: the insurer pays what the car is worth at the time of the loss. Bank Negara requires insurers to show your car's present market value, from an industry valuation database, on the renewal notice, and to use the same database when you claim.
- Agreed value: you and the insurer agree a figure when you buy the policy, and that's what a total loss pays, whatever the car has depreciated to since. It can cost a little more and isn't offered on every plan.
Insure for less than the car is worth and a claim pays less. Insure for more and you pay a higher premium for money you'll never be paid. If your loan balance is close to the car's value, agreed value protects you from owing the bank more than the insurer pays out.
3. Your no-claim discount
Private cars earn a no-claim discount (NCD) of 25% to 55% for claim-free years. Check the renewal shows the right step, especially if you've changed cars or insurers. Our guide to NCD in Malaysia explains how it's earned and lost.
4. Quotes from more than one insurer
Since liberalisation, insurers price comprehensive and fire-and-theft cover on their own view of the risk, so the same car and driver can get different premiums. Get at least two other quotes for the same sum insured and the same add-ons, so you're comparing like for like.
5. Add-ons you'll use
Add-on covers are sold separately and priced by each insurer. Common examples are windscreen cover and flood (special perils) cover. Pay for the ones that match how and where you drive, not every box on the form. If a windscreen claim is likely, read our windscreen claim guide first.
6. Then renew the road tax
Once the policy is paid, renew road tax in the MyJPJ app or at a counter. Road tax for private cars has been digital since February 2023, so there's no sticker to wait for. Our road tax renewal guide covers it.
Renewal questions
Can I drive while my insurance renewal is being processed?
Only if the old policy is still in force. Third-party cover is compulsory, so renew before the expiry date, not on it.
When should I start comparing quotes?
When the renewal notice arrives. It shows the market value and the insurer's price, which gives you the figures to compare against.
Is there a way to stop doing this every year?
Yes. On Grandpride Subscription, the monthly price includes insurance, road tax, routine maintenance and roadside assistance, so there's no renewal to remember; you pay for fuel and any distance over your mileage package. On Lease to Own, Grandpride arranges road tax and insurance in-house, though they aren't part of the lease itself. Our comparison of subscription, lease and hire purchase puts the three side by side.
