Credit card car rental insurance in Malaysia works only if your card's own conditions fit the rental you're making, and for a luxury car they may not. The benefit usually pays you back for damage you've already paid the rental company for, on the condition that you paid for the rental with that card and turned down the company's own damage waiver. Some cards also leave out expensive cars. So before you skip an upgrade at Grandpride because "the card covers it", get the card's terms in writing.
How card cover normally works
The details belong to your card, so read your own benefit guide. As an example of how these benefits are written, Visa's published auto rental collision damage waiver asks for all of this:
- the whole rental reserved and paid for with the covered card;
- the rental company's collision or loss damage waiver declined;
- the cardholder named as the main renter on the agreement;
- damage reported to the card's benefit service within a deadline (45 days in Visa's terms).
The same terms exclude some vehicles, and different sections of that page disagree on whether luxury cars are covered at all. That's the warning: the words "luxury" and "exotic" decide claims on a fleet like ours, so get the answer for the exact car.
The other thing to understand is the order of payment. If the car is damaged, the rental company charges you, and you then claim from the card's insurer. You need the money, or the card limit, in between.
How it sits with Grandpride's protection
Every Grandpride rental comes with a choice of three levels. Basic Cover is included: you pay for damage up to the standard excess. A Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) lowers that excess. Grandpride Protection+ makes it zero for damage and theft, with glass and tyres included. Prices vary by car and show as you book.
| If you choose | What you'd owe Grandpride after damage | Where card cover could help |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Cover only | Up to the standard excess | Paying you back that excess, if the card covers this car |
| Loss Damage Waiver | Up to the lower excess | Little, and buying LDW may break the card's "decline the waiver" condition |
| Protection+ | Nothing for covered damage | Not needed for damage |
Basic Cover can't be declined; it's part of the rental. Whether your card treats an included cover like ours as "the rental company's waiver" is a question for your bank, not for us. The excess figures themselves are CHECK: the standard excess under Basic Cover and the reduced excess under LDW, by car class.
Our view, given how the conditions read: if your card's terms clearly cover the car you're renting, Basic Cover plus the card is a reasonable plan. If they're vague about luxury or high-value cars, take Protection+ and stop worrying about it. For a supercar we'd take Protection+ either way. Rental car protection explained goes through the three levels in more detail.
The payment condition and how Grandpride takes money
Card cover usually needs the whole rental paid with the card. At Grandpride you pay a RM 50 booking fee online when you reserve, which comes off the total, and the rest in store or in person. Pay both parts with the same card if your benefit depends on it. Whether the balance can go on a credit card in store, and whose name the card must be in, is CHECK: accepted payment methods for the balance and the deposit, and must the card be in the renter's name.
The deposit is a separate thing again: money held during the rental and returned after, less anything owed. Card insurance doesn't replace it. How rental deposits work covers it, and if you don't have a credit card at all, read renting a car without a credit card.
Questions to ask your bank before you rely on the card
- Does my card include rental car damage cover, and does it apply to rentals in Malaysia?
- Is it primary, or does it only pay after my own motor or travel insurance?
- Which cars are excluded? Ask about this exact model and its value, for example a Porsche, a Range Rover or a Lamborghini.
- Must I decline every waiver the rental company offers, and does an included basic cover count as one?
- Must the whole rental, including a booking fee paid online, go on this card?
- Is there a limit on the number of days, or on the amount paid out?
- Are theft, glass, tyres and loss of use covered, or only collision damage?
- What documents do I need for a claim, and by when?
Ask for the answers by email, not over the phone.
A few edge cases
Only the named renter may drive a Grandpride self-drive car, whatever the card says about additional drivers. The car must stay in Peninsular Malaysia, so a card that covers Singapore doesn't change where you can take it. Kilometres over your allowance are charged under the rental, outside any insurance, and the car goes back with the fuel level it had at collection.
Travelling from abroad? Some travel insurance policies sell rental excess cover as an add-on. The same questions apply. When you've decided, choose the car and protection on the booking page; the price of each level for that car shows before you reserve.
