Car rental insurance in Malaysia, explained simply

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 8 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Ask one question: if something goes wrong, what's the most I could pay? That figure is the excess, and car rental insurance in Malaysia is mostly about how big it is. At Grandpride there are three levels. Basic Cover comes with every rental, and under it you pay for damage up to the standard excess. A Loss Damage Waiver lowers that excess. Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft, with glass and tyres included. Each is priced for the car you pick and shown as you book, next to your mileage and toll card.

How theft, glass and tyres are treated under the first two: CHECK: under Basic Cover and under LDW, what is the theft excess, and are glass and tyres covered?.

How the excess works

It's the most you pay towards a covered loss during the rental. If the repair costs less than the excess, you pay the repair. If it costs more, you pay the excess and nothing beyond it. With zero excess, you pay nothing towards covered damage.

The standard excess depends on the car CHECK: the standard excess under Basic Cover and the reduced excess under LDW, for each car class, e.g. sedan, SUV, MPV, supercar, and so does the price of each upgrade, because repair bills do. A windscreen for a family SUV and one for a supercar are very different invoices. Whether the excess applies per incident or per rental: CHECK: is the excess charged per incident or per rental.

What people get wrong

"LDW and CDW are the same thing." Not quite. Comparing companies, you'll see both. A Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) usually limits what you pay after a collision. A Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) usually goes further and covers loss of the car too, such as theft. Both are waivers, not insurance policies in your name: the rental company agrees not to charge you beyond a set excess. Terms vary between companies, so read what each covers rather than trusting the label. Grandpride's three are named plainly: Basic Cover, Loss Damage Waiver, Protection+.

"Zero excess means everything is covered." No plan covers everything. Protection+ gives zero excess on damage and theft and includes glass and tyres, within conditions that apply to all three levels CHECK: what no protection level covers, e.g. an unnamed driver, driving under the influence, lost keys, interior damage, off-road use. If you're not sure something you've planned is covered, ask us before you book.

"Glass and tyres only get damaged in accidents." They're often damaged with no collision at all: a stone chip on the expressway, a pothole, a kerb. Protection+ includes them.

"The deposit is the same thing as the protection." It isn't. Rental companies in Malaysia commonly hold a refundable deposit at the start and return it after the car comes back, less anything owed, such as damage within the excess, extra kilometres or fuel. Protection decides how much you could owe; the deposit is held until that's settled. How rental deposits work goes into it. Grandpride's figures: CHECK: deposit amount by car class, how it is paid, and how long the refund takes after return. Whether your protection level changes the deposit: CHECK: does the deposit amount depend on the protection level chosen.

"My credit card already covers it." Maybe. Some credit cards and travel policies include rental excess cover, but the terms vary a lot, and many exclude high-value cars or certain countries. Get it in writing from your provider before you rely on it.

"The right protection means anyone can drive." Whatever level you choose, only the named renter may drive, and the car stays in Peninsular Malaysia (no Singapore, no Thailand). Extra kilometres and fuel sit outside protection too; car rental mileage limits and toll cards explains those charges.

Which level for which rental

Start with the excess on the car you want. If you could pay that comfortably if the worst happened, Basic Cover may be enough. If not, compare each upgrade's price with how much excess it removes.

Basic Cover usually suits a short rental of an everyday car, mostly in town, by someone who knows the Klang Valley and is fine with the standard excess.

The Loss Damage Waiver suits a rental of a few days where you want a smaller worst case without paying for the top level, or a premium sedan or SUV where the standard excess would hurt but you're confident on the road.

Protection+ is the one we'd point you to for:

  • supercars and ultra-luxury cars, where a minor scrape is expensive to put right (the supercar rental guide covers what else to settle before you collect one);
  • wedding days and events, when other people park the car and venues are tight;
  • visitors driving on the left for the first time, or anyone new to KL traffic (see renting a car in Kuala Lumpur as a tourist);
  • long expressway drives, where windscreen chips are common;
  • performance cars on low-profile tyres, which potholes and kerbs damage easily.

If you change your mind after booking: CHECK: can protection be upgraded after booking or at handover. Message us on WhatsApp before the rental starts and we'll tell you what's possible.

If something happens

  1. Stop somewhere safe and check everyone is unhurt.
  2. Photograph the scene, the damage and any other vehicle's number plate.
  3. Call or WhatsApp us on +6010 322 3223 CHECK: out-of-hours emergency contact and accident procedure.
  4. Make a police report. In Malaysia an accident should be reported within 24 hours. What to do after a car accident has the full list.

And before you drive away at the start, walk round the car and photograph any marks already on it, so the record is clear for both sides. When you're ready, choose your car and protection; renting with Grandpride explains the rest from booking to return.
