Car rental deposit in Malaysia: from pickup to refund

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 3 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Mercedes-Benz E200 Coupe

Say you rent a coupé for the weekend. At pickup the rental company takes a deposit on top of the rental price, holds it while you have the car, checks the car when you bring it back, and then returns the deposit minus anything you owe. That is how a car rental deposit commonly works in Malaysia. Grandpride's amount and refund time are CHECK: deposit amount by car class, accepted payment methods for it, and how many days after return it is refunded or released.

Each stage has something you can do to make sure the whole amount comes back.

When the deposit is taken

Online, Grandpride takes only a RM 50 booking fee, which comes off the total and is not a deposit. You reserve on the website, then pay the rest of the rental, and the deposit, in store or in person when you collect the car or it's delivered.

The deposit is separate from the rental price and separate from protection. Protection decides how much you could owe if the car is damaged. The deposit is money held until that question, and a few others, are settled. Whether a higher protection level changes the deposit is CHECK: does the deposit amount depend on the protection level chosen.

How it's taken matters later. On a credit card it's usually a hold against your limit. On a debit card it's a hold or a charge against money in your account. By transfer or in cash, it leaves your hands and comes back as a refund. Our guide to renting without a credit card compares them.

What to do here: get the deposit amount in writing, with the method and the refund terms, before you drive away.

While you have the car

Most of what can come off a deposit is decided during the rental, not at the end of it:

  • Damage within your excess. Under Basic Cover you pay for damage up to the standard excess; a Loss Damage Waiver lowers it, and Grandpride Protection+ makes it zero for damage and theft, glass and tyres included.
  • Kilometres over your allowance. Every rental includes 120 km a day, and extra kilometres are charged at that car's per-km rate, shown when you book.
  • Fuel. The car goes back with the same fuel level it had at pickup.

Tolls are one thing that won't touch the deposit. Grandpride's Touch 'n Go card comes loaded with the amount you chose, RM 50 to RM 500, and you pay exactly what you loaded.

At the return

A quick return check compares the car with how it left: bodywork, wheels, glass, the fuel gauge and the odometer. If you photographed the car at pickup, any mark that was already there is already on record. Our pickup inspection checklist shows what to photograph, and avoiding damage disputes covers what to do if you and the company disagree about a mark.

Ask for anything deducted to be itemised, in writing, at the time.

When the money comes back

The timing depends on two things: the company's own refund terms and the way you paid. A card hold is released by your bank once the company settles the final bill, and each bank works to its own timescale. A refund by transfer arrives when the company sends it. Cash can come back at the counter.

One thing can arrive after the refund: a traffic summons. Camera summonses go to the car's registered owner first and can take time to arrive. Whether Grandpride holds part of the deposit for that is CHECK: is any part of the deposit kept after return to cover late-arriving summonses, and for how long. Our guide on who pays traffic fines on a rental car explains how they're traced to the driver.

Quick answers

How much is a car rental deposit in Malaysia?

There's no standard figure. Each company sets its own, and it can differ from car to car. Ask for the amount on the exact car you want before you book. For Grandpride's figures, message us with the car and dates.

How long does it take to get a car rental deposit back?

It depends on the company's terms and on how you paid. A card hold also depends on your bank. Get the refund timeline in writing at pickup so you know when to chase it.

How can I avoid a car rental deposit?

If a company offers a rental with no deposit, ask what replaces it, whether that's a card hold, a fee or a bigger excess. Read what "no deposit" car rental usually means first. If you don't want to hold the keys at all, a chauffeur is booked by the hour, with a RM 50 booking fee online and the rest paid in store or in person.

Does the deposit cover damage?

It's held against damage up to your excess, but it isn't a limit on what you owe. If a repair costs more than the deposit and your protection doesn't cover it, the difference is still yours to pay. Our guide to car rental insurance and excess explains the three levels.
