How to renew your driving licence in Malaysia

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 1 question for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Perodua Myvi

The quickest way to renew a driving licence in Malaysia is the MyJPJ app, which has handled licence renewals since 1 February 2024. You pay in the app and your digital licence updates there. You can also renew through MyEG, at a post office or at a JPJ counter. This is the process as at November 2026.

Check one thing before any of them: unpaid summonses. A JPJ blacklist for unpaid summonses can block a renewal, and finding that out at the counter wastes a trip. Our guide to checking traffic summonses online shows how to look yours up.

Renewing in the MyJPJ app

  1. Install MyJPJ and log in.
  2. Go to Profile, then Competent Driving Licence (CDL), then Renewal.
  3. Choose how many years to renew for. Longer periods cost more up front; the app shows the fee for each option.
  4. Choose a digital licence only, or ask for a physical card as well. If you pick digital only, no card is issued.
  5. Pay in the app.

The digital licence (e-LMM) has been valid to show since February 2023, from the MyJPJ app or the JPJ public portal. Enforcement officers can also check your licence status on their own systems. Our MyJPJ app guide covers the app's other uses, such as road tax.

Other ways to renew

  • MyEG, on its website or app. You renew and pay online, and a physical licence is delivered to your address.
  • Pos Malaysia post offices, over the counter.
  • JPJ counters: state offices, branches, UTCs and JPJ mobile counters.

Use a counter if the app refuses you, if your details need correcting, or if you'd rather have someone check everything in front of you. Bring your MyKad.

If your licence has already expired

Renew it before you drive again. How long it has been expired decides what happens:

Expired forWhat you do
Up to 3 yearsRenew it. If the app won't take it, go to a counter
More than 3 yearsThe licence is no longer valid and can't be renewed. You repeat the whole licence process from the start

If your licence expired more than three years ago, JPJ runs an appeal service through its public portal. It takes about 14 working days and is subject to JPJ's review, so the outcome isn't guaranteed. Apply before you book driving lessons.

Since the BUDI95 fuel subsidy started in September 2025, a valid licence is also what gets a Malaysian the subsidised RON95 price, so a lapsed licence costs you at the pump too.

P licences are different

A probationary (P) licence can't be renewed once its two-year period is over. You convert it to a competent driving licence instead, and you have one year to do it. Our guide to Malaysian driving licence classes explains the P, CDL and other types.

Before you renew

How much does it cost to renew?

The fee depends on the licence class and how many years you choose, and the app or counter shows it before you pay. We don't print the amounts here because JPJ sets them and they change.

I need to drive this week and my licence has lapsed. What now?

Renew first, in the app if it lets you. If the car still has to be driven in the meantime, someone with a valid licence has to drive it. Grandpride's driver service sends a driver to drive your own car, from RM 385 for an 8-hour day.

Does Grandpride check my licence when I rent?

Yes, the driver details go into the booking, and the named renter is the only person allowed to drive. Which licences are accepted, and for how long you must have held one, is CHECK: licence types accepted for self-drive rental and minimum years held. You'll find the cars on the fleet list, and your road tax, if it's due at the same time, in our road tax renewal guide.
