KL to Kluang by car

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Mercedes-Benz GLC250 4Matic

KL to Kluang is about 265 km, roughly three hours by car. You drive the North-South Expressway south almost to the Johor end, leave it at Ayer Hitam, and cover the last stretch on Federal Route 50. Kluang's best-known stop is a coffee shop inside the railway station.

The road down

From PJ, take the expressway south through Seremban and past the Ayer Keroh exit for Melaka. Pagoh has a rest area on both sides, and Yong Peng, a little further, has a rest stop. Either works for a break.

Leave the expressway at Ayer Hitam, exit 244. Route 50 runs from the interchange towards Kluang. Waze will also offer you Simpang Renggam, exit 247, depending on where in Kluang you're headed. Up to Ayer Hitam it's the same road as the drive from KL to Johor Bahru, so Kluang can also be a breakfast stop on the way to JB.

Coming back, traffic into KL is heavier on Sunday evenings and at the end of holidays, so start home by mid-afternoon if you can; our guide to KL traffic times shows the patterns.

Kluang Rail Coffee

The Lim family took over the canteen at Kluang railway station in 1938, and the fourth generation runs it now. The menu is the old kopitiam one: coffee, toast with kaya or butter, half-boiled eggs and nasi lemak.

The family has opened branches elsewhere, so the toast isn't only found in Kluang. You drive down for the original shop at the station. It has been closed on Thursdays and shuts between the morning and afternoon sessions, so check the current hours before you set off.

The rest of the day

Gunung Lambak is Kluang's highest hill, 510 m, in a recreational forest by the town. A reasonably fit walker gets up in under two hours. Go early, before the heat, and do it before the coffee if you can wait.

Kluang works well paired with Muar on the coast. Our Muar food trip is planned as a day on its own, but with one night you can do Muar on day one and Kluang the next morning.

Mileage and the car

The round trip is about 530 km before any driving around town. Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day.

  • Day trip: choose unlimited.
  • One night: 240 km included plus +100 km a day still leaves you short, so choose unlimited.
  • Two nights: +100 km a day gives 660 km, which covers it.

Unlimited costs less per km than paying the car's per-km rate after the trip. Only the named renter can drive, so six hours of expressway in one day falls on one person. The car goes back with the same fuel level it left with.

For three hours each way with a family, an SUV is comfortable: the Mercedes-Benz GLC 250 4Matic is RM 1,700 a day. Two people can do it in any sedan on the rental page.

Quick answers

How long is the drive from KL to Kluang?

About three hours for 265 km in clear traffic, longer at the start of a long weekend.

Is Kluang worth a day trip from KL?

If the station coffee shop and a hill walk are what you want, yes, but six hours of driving for a morning is a lot. With a night in Muar or Kluang, the trip makes more sense.

Is there a train from KL to Kluang?

Kluang is on the railway line south to Johor Bahru, and Kluang Rail Coffee is in its station. Times and connections change, so check KTMB before you plan around it. With a car, you also get Gunung Lambak and Muar, which a train timetable makes harder.
