KL traffic jam times: the best and worst times to drive

Avoid weekday evenings. The KL traffic jam is at its worst from about 5 pm to 8 pm, peaking around 6 pm, and the slowest evenings are usually midweek. The morning peak around 8 am is shorter. If you have a choice, drive mid-morning, early afternoon, or after 8.30 pm, and look at a live traffic app before you leave.

TomTom's traffic index for Kuala Lumpur in 2025 puts numbers on it: an average 10 km drive took about 18 minutes across the year, about 21 minutes in the morning rush and about 26 minutes in the evening rush.

A weekday, by the clock

TimeWhat to expect
Before about 7 amUsually flowing
About 7 am to 9.30 amMorning peak, heaviest around 8 am
Late morning to mid-afternoonThe easiest window of the working day
About 5 pm to 8 pmEvening peak, the slowest of the day, worst around 6 pm
After about 8.30 pmEasing, unless it's raining or there's an event

In 2025, Wednesday and Thursday evenings were the slowest of the week and weekends were generally lighter. The worst single day of the year was Thursday 4 December. These are averages. One road near an accident or roadworks can do something quite different.

What changes the pattern

Rain. Afternoon thunderstorms are normal in KL and heaviest in the inter-monsoon months around October. A downpour slows everyone and can flood underpasses and low roads fast, so an evening rush in heavy rain takes far longer than usual. If it's pouring at 5 pm and the trip can wait, wait. Driving in the monsoon season covers what to do if you're already out in it.

Friday lunchtime. Many offices take a longer midday break on Fridays for prayers, for example 12.15 pm to 2.45 pm, so midday traffic looks different from other weekdays, especially near mosques.

Ramadan. Many public servants may finish work earlier during the fasting month, so the evening rush can start earlier as people head home to break their fast. Ramadan driving tips has more on that month.

Events. Big concerts and matches bring their own jam round the venue. Check what's on before heading that way in the evening.

The festive exodus

Before Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and the school holidays, millions of people drive home. For the Hari Raya Haji and school holiday period in 2026, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) expected more than three million vehicles on the main highways, with the PLUS expressways busiest, then the DUKE highway and the KL–Karak Expressway.

LLM and the operators publish a Travel Time Advisory, a suggested schedule for when people heading to each region should travel, to spread the load. They also open "smart lanes" using the emergency lane, and ban lane closures for roadworks on the peak days. Follow the advisory and leave early in the morning on your day. Chinese New Year car rental and Alphard rental for Hari Raya look at the festive season from a family's side.

The Karak highway deserves its own warning. The KL–Karak Expressway is the road to Genting Highlands, Bentong and the east coast, and it jams on long weekends, school holidays and festival eves. Gombak toll plaza to Genting Sempah is the known hotspot, both ways: outbound as a holiday starts, back into KL as it ends. Driving the Genting road and the east coast road trip help you time those.

Checking before you go

  • A navigation app with live traffic, to see what's happening now and compare routes.
  • The PLUS app, which predicts traffic on its expressways for a date and time you choose and shows live cameras.
  • The LLM website, with regularly updated camera images for more than 30 highways.
  • PLUS on X (@plustrafik), for live incidents.

Working round it

For KLIA, which is about 50 to 60 km from the city, allow a lot more time if you're leaving in the evening peak, and if your flight lets you, don't set off in the evening rush at all. A chauffeured KLIA transfer is a flat fare, day or night, and if you give us your flight number the chauffeur tracks it for delays. How early to leave for KLIA has more on timing the airport run.

On a chauffeur booked by the hour, Grandpride's rate goes up 30% for hours starting between 7 pm and 11 pm and 50% from 11 pm to 7 am. A day that finishes before 7 pm avoids the evening rate, though not always the evening rush. Hourly chauffeur pricing in KL explains the bands.

For a rental, choose a handover time outside the rush and everyone's meeting is easier. Grandpride delivers across the Klang Valley, free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere. For a car that's easy to live with in slow traffic, the Proton X50 is a compact SUV at RM 600 a day.

Pukul berapa jalan sesak di KL? Paling teruk pada waktu petang hari bekerja, sekitar 5 petang hingga 8 malam, dan pagi sekitar pukul 8. Hujan lebat menjadikannya lebih perlahan.

And if sitting in it is the part you'd rather not do, a Grandpride chauffeur drives while you work or sleep.
