KL to Fraser's Hill by car is about 100 km and takes roughly one and a half to two hours, and most of that time is spent on the last part: the winding road up from Kuala Kubu Bharu to The Gap, then a steep climb of about 8 km to the top. It's slower and quieter than Genting. Go in a compact SUV, go on a weekday, and stay the night if you can.
Early: leave PJ
Head north on the North–South Expressway towards Ipoh. Leave it at Rawang or Bukit Beruntung and follow the signs north to Kuala Kubu Bharu. That's the easy part, and the only stretch where you'll make good time.
The point of an early start is to be on the hill road with plenty of daylight left, well before the afternoon. It's a narrow mountain road through forest, and far easier to read in good light.
Kuala Kubu Bharu: fill up
Fill the tank in Kuala Kubu Bharu before you start climbing. It's the last easy place to do it, and on a rental the car goes back with the fuel level it left with anyway. From town, follow the signs to Bukit Fraser. A live map helps with the turns, but once you're off the expressway trust the road signs.
Kuala Kubu Bharu to The Gap
Forest, and bend after bend, so take it slowly. On the steep sections use a low gear going up, and on the way back down let the engine do some of the braking.
Hill roads in Malaysia close for landslides or repairs, especially after heavy rain. Look for road notices on the day before you set off.
The Gap to the top
Older guides, and older relatives, will tell you the last stretch runs on a timetable, up one hour and down the next. That stopped in 2001. A second road now carries traffic down, and the original road from The Gap takes uphill traffic only, so there's no waiting for your turn.
The uphill road is still single-lane, steep and tight, with little room for error. This is where a car you can place precisely earns its keep.
At the top
Fraser's Hill sits at around 1,450 to 1,500 m. Daytime temperatures are typically 18 to 25°C, and you'll want a sweater at night. It's a place for walking, birds and quiet, not attractions.
- The town: a clock tower and mock-Tudor buildings left from the British hill station.
- Birds. Around 250 resident and migratory species have been recorded, and birders travel a long way for them.
- Jeriau Waterfall, about 4 km from town, with a pool at the bottom.
- Allan's Water, a small lake with boats.
- Trails, from short loops to the Pine Tree Trail, a full day of five to eight hours. Some are muddy, slippery and leechy, so wear proper shoes.
Then: stay, or head down
If you can, stay. You get the cool evening and the early-morning birds, which is when the hill is at its best. As a day trip you only get a few hours up there, because the hill road eats the time. And the road is slow rather than long, so a night costs less in mileage too.
Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, with +50 km, +100 km or unlimited as add-ons.
| Plan | Roughly | Package |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip from Petaling Jaya | 220 to 240 km | Unlimited (+100 km gives 220 km, usually just short) |
| One night, the drive up | 110 to 130 km | +50 km a day |
| One night, the drive down | 110 to 130 km | +50 km a day |
Anything over your allowance is charged at the car's per-km rate, shown when you book. Only the named renter may drive, so one person does both climbs.
The car
On a single-lane climb, pick something you can place to the centimetre. A compact SUV sits high enough to see round the bends and isn't so wide that oncoming traffic on the lower road feels close. The Porsche Macan, at RM 2,000 a day, is as happy on the expressway as on the climb, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC250 4Matic, at RM 1,700 a day, fits too. Porsche rental in Malaysia compares the Macan with the other Porsches.
Families: a larger SUV, driven gently for anyone who gets carsick. All of them are on the SUV list.
Leave the wide, low supercar for another day. It makes the final climb hard work and the car parks at the top awkward. If a supercar is what you're after, read driving a supercar for the first time and choose a wider road.
Or let someone else do the climb
A Grandpride chauffeur by the hour, 3 to 23 hours; a Fraser's Hill day trip usually takes nine or ten. Daytime hours in a Toyota Vellfire are RM 150 each. Hours starting from 7 pm cost 30% more, so start down in good time. The chauffeur booking page shows the full price before you reserve.
If Fraser's Hill isn't quite it
Genting is the busy resort with the most to do; driving up the Genting road covers that climb. Bukit Tinggi is the shortest drive, a French-themed village for half a day; see KL to Bukit Tinggi. Fraser's Hill is the quietest of the three, with the hardest road.
