Toyota Harrier

Book the Harrier if you want a comfortable, quiet SUV for a few days and don't need the car to make a statement. Toyota Harrier rental in Kuala Lumpur with Grandpride starts from RM 600 a day. There are two on the list: one Harrier at RM 600 a day and another at RM 700. CHECK: what differs between the two Harriers: year, generation, engine or trim?

The Harrier is a five-seat crossover SUV. Early Harriers were sold outside Japan as the Lexus RX; since 2013 it has been a separate model. Malaysia has had two recent generations: the XU60, sold here from 2017, and the current XU80, launched here in 2021 with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a CVT gearbox. CHECK: which generation each Grandpride Harrier is

Where it's the right car

A family of four or five with weekend bags. The Harrier has a proper boot and a higher seat than a saloon, and it is the sort of car you can drive for three and a half hours to Cameron Highlands and step out of without feeling it.

A balik kampung drive with parents in the back. The seat height is easier on older knees than a low saloon, and a five-seat SUV with a full boot handles the gifts and the food containers coming home. Leave early or late on the eve of a holiday; festive season traffic explains why.

A work trip where the car should be smart but quiet. A Harrier in a client's car park says nothing in particular, and sometimes that is what you want. If you're relocating and need a car while you sort out your own, our guide to cars for expats in Malaysia compares renting by the month with subscription and leasing.

A week or two of normal life. For longer rentals, daily, weekly and monthly car rental explains how the totals work. CHECK: are there weekly or monthly rates for the Harrier, or is it the day rate per day?

Where it isn't

Seven people. The Harrier seats five. For more, read the MPV rental guide and look at the Vellfire or Alphard.

A drive that should feel like an occasion. The Harrier is built for comfort, and if the point of the day is the drive itself, a sports car is the better booking.

The tightest budget. The Proton X50 is RM 600 a day and the X70 RM 800. Both are SUVs, and the Proton X70 rental guide covers the larger of the two.

A premium badge. The Mercedes-Benz GLC250 4Matic is RM 1,700 a day, and the Volvo XC90 from RM 1,400.

The practical part

Every day includes 120 km and Basic Cover. That covers ordinary Klang Valley driving. A Cameron Highlands weekend runs past 400 km for the round trip, well over the 240 km that two days include, so add 100 km a day or take unlimited mileage while you book rather than paying the per-km rate later. Return the car with the fuel level you collected it at; it stays in Peninsular Malaysia, and only the named renter drives.

Delivery is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Protection runs from the included Basic Cover to a Loss Damage Waiver that lowers the excess, up to Grandpride Protection+ with no excess for damage or theft and glass and tyres covered. You see the full itemised price before reserving, and only a RM 50 booking fee is paid online; the rest you pay in store or in person. CHECK: deposit amount for the Harrier

The Harrier sits in the middle of the SUV list, which runs from the Proton X50 to the Lamborghini Urus, with live availability for your dates.
