McLaren rental in Malaysia: 570S or 720S?

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 1 question for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

McLaren 570s

If it's your first supercar, take the 570S. If you've driven powerful cars before and want the most power here, take the 720S. McLaren rental in Malaysia with Grandpride means one of those two cars: the McLaren 570S is RM 8,800 a day and the McLaren 720S from RM 7,700 a day, both with 120 km a day and Basic Cover included, and either can be delivered to your door in the Klang Valley. For photos and arrivals it doesn't matter which; both draw a crowd the moment the doors go up.

The 720S says "from" because it has more than one listing, each with its own rate; the car's page on the McLaren list shows the exact figure for your dates. The GT has no published day rate, so message us for a price.

Why the 570S for a first time

The number in each name is the engine's output in metric horsepower (PS). That's the plainest way to see the gap.

The 570S is from McLaren's Sports Series, built from 2015 to 2021. It has a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 behind the seats, a carbon-fibre tub, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and dihedral doors that open up and forward. It's quick by any measure, and it's also the easier of the two to place on the road and the calmer one at ordinary speeds.

The 720S is a step up, in the Super Series, built from 2017 until the 750S replaced it in 2023. Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 makes 720 PS, around a quarter more than the 570S, on a newer carbon-fibre structure. The doors are hinged at two points and swing up and out in a wider arc. It's dramatically faster in a straight line and asks more of you when the road is wet or uneven.

If the McLaren is a toss-up against a Ferrari, our Ferrari rental guide covers the naturally aspirated 458 Italia, which is the obvious alternative.

The first hour with either car

Open the door with care. They rise as they open and need room above and beside the car, so check for a low ceiling, a pillar or a car parked tight before you lift one. An end bay is easier than one in the middle of a row. To get in, lower yourself onto the seat first and then swing your legs in.

Mind the nose. It's long and low. Take speed bumps, kerbs and steep ramps slowly and at an angle, and stay out of car parks with tight spiral ramps. At handover, ask whether the car has a front-lift function and how to use it. Parking in Kuala Lumpur has notes on picking a car park for a low car.

Learn the throttle before you use it. Both cars deliver their power in a rush once the turbos are working. Spend the first half hour feeling how the throttle and brakes respond, and keep the car in its calmest drive mode in town. In heavy rain, wide tyres can skim standing water, so slow down early. Our guide to driving a supercar for the first time covers seating, gearboxes and wet roads.

Watch the speedometer. A McLaren gets to the expressway limit in a few seconds, and speed cameras are common on Malaysian roads. Speed limits and AES cameras in Malaysia explains where the limits change.

What the day costs on top

The 120 km a day covers a drive around the Klang Valley with dinner at the end. For anything further, add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited, before you reserve. Kilometres paid for afterwards are charged at the car's own per-km rate, which costs more than the add-on.

Basic Cover comes with every day and leaves you paying up to the standard excess if the car is damaged. A Loss Damage Waiver brings the excess down; Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft and adds glass and tyres. Each is priced for the car and shown as you book. On a car this low and this expensive to repair, read the excess before you decide. Our guide to rental car insurance in Malaysia explains the levels.

Fuel isn't included: bring it back at the level you collected it. A Touch 'n Go card with RM 50 to RM 500 on it can come with the keys.

Booking

Set your dates on the McLaren list first; one that's already taken shows as not available. Pick the car and your pick-up and return times, add protection, mileage and the toll card, then check out as a guest and choose delivery or collection at the Petaling Jaya showroom. Online you pay only a RM 50 booking fee, which comes off the itemised total; the rest is settled in store or in person.

Someone else can collect the McLaren for you if their details are on the booking, but only the named renter drives it, and it stays in Peninsular Malaysia. You'll also need to meet the driver requirements on the day CHECK: deposit amount for the McLarens, minimum driver age and licence requirements.

McLaren 570S lebih mudah dikendalikan untuk kali pertama, pada kadar RM 8,800 sehari, manakala 720S jauh lebih berkuasa dan bermula RM 7,700 sehari. To see what else you'd be booking, read how renting with Grandpride works.
