Mini Cooper rental in KL: what people get wrong about the Clubman

Mini Cooper Clubman

Mini Cooper rental in KL with Grandpride means the Clubman, the long one with the two little doors at the back, at RM 1,100 a day. It includes 120 km a day and Basic Cover, it can be delivered to you, and only a RM 50 booking fee is paid online.

"It's a two-door hatchback"

Not this one. The current-shape Clubman, built from 2015 until February 2024 at Mini's Oxford plant, has four ordinary doors plus a pair of side-hinged doors at the back in place of a tailgate. At 4.27 metres long it was the largest Mini when it was launched. Rear passengers get their own doors, and the boot is a usable size for a couple's weekend bags.

The earlier Clubman, made from 2007, had a single small rear door on one side only, which on right-hand-drive cars opened towards the road. CHECK: which Clubman generation is the Grandpride car, and what year?

"It's only for the city"

A Mini is comfortable on the expressway. A Saturday at the beach in Port Dickson or lunch in Melaka is an easy day out, and the only thing to plan is mileage. 120 km a day covers the Klang Valley; Port Dickson and back is roughly 200 km, so add 100 km when you book, and Melaka, at close to 300 km there and back, needs unlimited mileage. Either costs less per kilometre than paying the per-km rate after the rental.

"Small means you can park anywhere"

It's smaller than an SUV, and that helps in the older streets of Bangsar, Damansara Utama or SS2, and in tight basement car parks. But the Clubman is the long Mini, so don't expect it to fit every gap a Myvi would. Street parking in KL is cashless and paid through an app, and in PJ the signboard by the bay tells you which one; parking in Kuala Lumpur explains how.

"Every Mini is a Cooper S"

Clubmans were sold with several engines. The Cooper had a 1.5-litre three-cylinder, the Cooper S a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, and the John Cooper Works version more power again. CHECK: is the Grandpride Clubman a Cooper or a Cooper S? Either way, it has more personality than most small cars, which is the reason to pay more for it.

"A Mini costs about the same as any small car"

Not quite. The Clubman costs more than the everyday small cars:

CarDay rateWhy you'd pick it
Perodua MyviRM 200Errands and the lowest cost
Honda JazzRM 600A practical small car
Mini Cooper ClubmanRM 1,100Character, and four proper doors
BMW Z4RM 1,500Two seats and a folding roof

If cost is the main thing, our Myvi rental guide does the sums for a day, a week and a month. If you want the drive to feel like a treat and only need two seats, the roadsters are in convertible car rental in KL.

Booking it

Choose your dates and times, then protection (Basic Cover is included; the Loss Damage Waiver lowers the excess; Grandpride Protection+ removes it for damage and theft and adds glass and tyres), any extra mileage, and a Touch 'n Go card with RM 50 to RM 500 on it if you want one. Delivery is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Only the named renter drives, the fuel goes back at the level it came, and the car stays in Peninsular Malaysia. CHECK: deposit amount for the Clubman

One habit to pick up on the first day: the rear doors swing outwards, so when you reverse into a bay against a wall or another car, stop a little short if you'll need the boot.
