Rent out my car: how to get it ready to host

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 6 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Mercedes-Benz C200 Coupe

"Can I rent out my car?" comes before "is my car ready?", so settle the legal question first; the rest doesn't matter until you have. Malaysia's land transport agency, APAD, has said renting out private cars commercially is illegal and breaches the insurance policy, and the Road Transport Department has said such cars can be seized. A car can only be rented out lawfully under a valid rental permit. So the first thing to ask Grandpride is how your car would be brought under its rental permit CHECK: how host cars are brought under Grandpride's APAD rental permit, including inspections and the hexagon sticker.

After that it's about the car: serviced, cleaned, photographed, its condition on record, its paperwork and insurance in order. A car that's ready on day one is easier to hand over, and easier to defend if there's ever a dispute.

How Be a Host works: you apply on WhatsApp, you set when the car is available, its price and your requirements for guests, and Grandpride verifies each guest (ID, licence, background check) and markets the car at its own cost. Grandpride is looking for sedans, coupés, MPVs and convertibles. There's no income guarantee and no fixed earnings figure; what a car earns depends on the car, your price and how often it's booked. The arrangement end to end is in renting out your car in Malaysia.

Paperwork, before you apply

  • Registration in your name.
  • Road tax valid for the coming months. For most private cars it has been a digital record since 2023, so check yours is current.
  • Your insurance policy. Know what it covers and what it says about other people using the car. Car sharing insurance in Malaysia explains why a private policy usually doesn't cover rentals, and what to settle with Grandpride.
  • Your loan, if there is one. On hire purchase, the bank owns the car until the last instalment. Read your agreement and ask your lender before you host it CHECK: whether Grandpride accepts host cars that are still under hire purchase, and what it needs from the lender.
  • Service records: a stamped book or workshop invoices. They show the car has been looked after.

Then ask Grandpride what else it needs CHECK: the documents a host must provide, and any limits on the car's age, mileage and condition.

The workshop visit

The test is simple: fix anything that would make you hesitate to lend the car to a friend. In practice that means:

  • a full service if one is due or nearly due;
  • tyres with good tread, no bulges, correct pressures, and a usable spare or repair kit;
  • brake pads and discs;
  • the battery, because an ageing one leaves a guest with a car that won't start;
  • air-conditioning, which a guest in Malaysian heat will notice straight away;
  • wipers and lights, cheap to fix and needed in a tropical downpour;
  • no warning lights on the dashboard.

The clean

Clean it as if you were selling it. Vacuum the carpets and boot, wipe every surface, do the glass, and get rid of any smell. A professional detail before the first rental makes sense; Grandpride's sister business, Grandlab Detailing, does detailing CHECK: whether Grandpride arranges detailing for host cars, and at whose cost.

Take out everything personal: documents, parking cards, the charging cable you'll need yourself, sunglasses, whatever's in the door pockets. Then decide what stays with the car, a phone holder or an umbrella say, and write it down.

Take your own Touch 'n Go card out too. If the car has an RFID tag, tolls come out of the eWallet linked to it, which is yours, so agree with Grandpride how tolls work during rentals before the first one CHECK: how tolls and RFID tags on host cars are handled during rentals.

Two sets of photos

The listing set is what guests see. Shoot in daylight, in an open, uncluttered space, straight after the clean: front three-quarter, rear three-quarter, side, front, rear, then the dashboard, front seats, rear seats and boot. Add whatever makes the car special, a panoramic roof, a good sound system, seven seats. Grandpride's own rental fleet shows the angles guests are used to CHECK: whether Grandpride takes the listing photos for host cars.

The condition set is your evidence. Every panel, each wheel and tyre, the windscreen, and every existing mark close up; the odometer and the fuel or charge level; the seats and carpets. Keep the dates. That's your record of the car before anyone else drove it, and avoiding rental car damage disputes explains how it gets used.

Your rules

You decide these with Grandpride:

  • Availability: weekends only, weekdays only, or open dates. Keep back the days you need.
  • Length: rentals can run from a day to years. Short ones mean more handovers; long ones mean the car is gone for weeks.
  • Guest requirements. The tighter they are, the fewer guests qualify.
  • Tracking: Grandpride can turn on high-accuracy tracking around the clock.
