Draft, not public. 8 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

If your car sits parked most of the week, you can rent it out through Grandpride's Be a Host programme. You decide when it's available, what it costs and who can rent it; Grandpride verifies every guest, can track the car around the clock, and pays for the marketing. Before you rent out your car in Malaysia, though, settle one thing first: a car may only be rented out to the public under a valid rental permit, so ask how yours will be covered. Grandpride doesn't quote an income figure, because nobody can promise one truthfully.

Permit and insurance: ask these before anything else

In Peninsular Malaysia, cars rented out to the public come under APAD's vehicle rental permit rules. Licensed rental cars are inspected every six months and carry a hexagon sticker. A car rented out without the right permit can be seized, the owner can be fined, and rental insurance may not apply.

So ask Grandpride two questions, on WhatsApp or through the contact page, and get the answers in writing:

  • How is my car covered by a rental permit while it's hosted? CHECK: how host cars are brought under Grandpride's APAD rental permit, including inspections and the hexagon sticker
  • What insurance covers my car while a guest is driving it? CHECK: the insurance that covers a host's car during a rental, the excess, and who claims

Guests renting from Grandpride's own fleet choose a protection level when they book, from Basic Cover down to zero excess; car rental insurance and excess in Malaysia explains the three levels. Whether the same levels apply on a hosted car is part of that second question. Car sharing insurance in Malaysia covers the general picture. None of this is legal advice; if anything's unclear, ask before you sign.

How it works, step by step

  1. Send your car's details to Grandpride on WhatsApp.
  2. Grandpride reviews the car and explains the arrangement CHECK: what happens after applying, for example an inspection, photos and a written host agreement.
  3. You set your terms: when the car is available, the price, and your requirements for who can rent it.
  4. Grandpride markets the car at its own cost and verifies every guest before a booking goes ahead.
  5. The car goes out, for anything from a single day to years, depending on what you allow.
  6. You get paid CHECK: how and when hosts are paid, and what share or fee Grandpride keeps.

Rental length is one of the bigger choices. Short rentals mean more handovers and more different guests; long ones mean fewer people, but the car is gone for weeks or months. Daily, weekly and monthly car rental shows what those rentals look like from the guest's side, which helps when you decide what to allow. Tighter guest requirements mean fewer eligible guests, so that's a trade-off too.

Verification and tracking cut the risk; they don't remove it. Before you sign, ask how damage, fines and disputes are dealt with CHECK: how damage, traffic fines and guest disputes are handled, and who pays.

Which cars

Grandpride is looking for sedans, coupés, MPVs and convertibles. For a feel of what guests rent, browse the rental fleet, which runs from everyday cars to limousines and supercars. Ask about your own car before you apply CHECK: limits on the car's age, mileage and condition, and whether a car still under hire purchase or a bank loan can be hosted. Our guide to preparing your car to rent out covers getting it ready.

Will it pay?

Some car-sharing adverts lead with a monthly income figure. We don't, because there isn't an honest single number. What a car earns depends on the car, the price you set, how often it's available and how often guests book it. Grandpride doesn't guarantee any income from hosting, and you shouldn't plan your finances around a figure you haven't seen in writing.

Hosting may suit you if the car spends long stretches parked, you're comfortable with other people driving it, and you'd like someone else to find and check the guests. It probably won't if you need the car most days, or if the loan on it means you're counting on steady income from it. If the real problem is paying for a car you hardly use, compare hosting with not owning one: car subscription in Malaysia explains a monthly subscription with insurance, road tax and maintenance included.

What owners ask

Can I still use my car when I want to?

Yes. You set when it's available, so you keep the days you need.

How do I get paid?

Ask when you apply, and get the answer in writing CHECK: payout schedule, method and Grandpride's fee or commission.
