Car sharing insurance in Malaysia: the questions to ask before your car goes out

Draft, not public. 5 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Before a stranger drives your car for money, get in writing whose insurance covers it during the rental. Car sharing insurance is the cover that protects your car, you and the guest while someone else rents and drives it. Sort it out before anything else, because an ordinary private car policy in Malaysia is written for private use. Renting the car out for money usually falls outside it, and a claim can be refused. None of what follows is insurance or legal advice; read your own policy and ask your insurer.

Will my own car insurance cover someone renting my car?

Usually not. A private car policy states how the car may be used, and renting it to strangers for money is a different use from driving yourself to work. Insurers price the two differently.

Malaysia's land transport agency, APAD, has said that renting out a private car for commercial use is illegal, risky and in breach of the insurance policy's terms, and the Road Transport Department has warned that such cars can be seized. If you use a car in a way your policy doesn't cover and don't tell your insurer, an accident claim may be denied. You would then pay for the damage, and for any claims from other people, yourself.

What has to be in place before a car can be rented out legally?

A rental permit. A car may only be rented out lawfully under a valid one. In Peninsular Malaysia, APAD permits self-drive rental operators; their rental cars are inspected every six months and carry a hexagon sticker, and anyone can check an operator's status with APAD. Without the right permit, the car can be seized and insurance generally won't cover an accident.

What cover does a car on Malaysian roads have anyway?

Every car on a public road must be insured against third-party risks under the Road Transport Act. Many owners go further:

TypeCovers other peopleCovers your car
Third partyInjury, death and damage to other people's propertyNo
Third party, fire and theftAs aboveFire and theft only
ComprehensiveAs aboveAccident damage, fire and theft

Your premium also depends on your no-claim discount, which for a private car runs from 25% up to 55% after claim-free years. Losing it costs you money on every renewal after, so ask about it before anyone else drives your car.

What car sharing insurance should cover

It's cover arranged for the rental itself, usually by the rental operator, that applies while a guest has your car. A good arrangement answers five things in writing:

  • who is insured: the guest as driver, and you as owner
  • what's covered: accident damage, theft, fire, and claims from third parties
  • when it applies: from the moment the guest takes the car until it's returned and checked
  • the excess on each claim, and who pays it
  • whether a claim during a rental ever touches your private policy or your no-claim discount

How does it work when I host with Grandpride?

When you host your car with Grandpride, you set when it's available, the price and your requirements for guests. Grandpride checks every guest's ID and licence and runs a background check, can switch on high-accuracy tracking around the clock, and pays for the marketing. On insurance, these four answers are still being confirmed, so get each one on paper before your car goes out:

  • the cover that applies while a guest drives your car CHECK: the insurance that covers a host's car during a rental, the insurer, and whether it is comprehensive
  • how your car is brought under a rental permit CHECK: how host cars are brought under Grandpride's APAD rental permit, including inspections and the hexagon sticker
  • what happens after damage CHECK: who makes the claim, the excess, who pays it, and whether the host's own no-claim discount is affected
  • what happens while the car is off the road CHECK: whether the host is compensated for days lost to repairs

When guests rent from Grandpride's own fleet, they pick their protection as they book: Basic Cover is included, a Loss Damage Waiver lowers the excess, and Grandpride Protection+ brings it to zero for damage and theft, glass and tyres included. Our guide to car rental insurance and excess in Malaysia explains the three. Whether the same choice applies to a hosted car is part of the first question above. Our view: if any of those four answers comes back vague, don't list the car yet.

Can I share a car that's still on a loan?

Ask your lender first. A car on hire purchase belongs to the bank or finance company until the last instalment, and financiers generally require comprehensive insurance throughout. Read your hire-purchase agreement and ask whether renting the car out is allowed.

What you must never do is hand a financed car to someone in return for them paying the instalments. That's sambung bayar, an offence under the Hire-Purchase Act 1967; our guide to the risks of sambung bayar explains why.

What else should I sort out before the first guest?

  1. Read the "use" section of your own policy, and call your insurer if anything's unclear.
  2. Get the rental permit position for your car confirmed in writing.
  3. Get the car sharing insurance details in writing: insurer, cover, excess, claims process.
  4. Ask how traffic fines, tolls and parking during a rental are handled CHECK: how fines and tolls incurred by guests are passed on.
  5. Photograph the car's condition before every rental, with dates.
  6. Keep your policy, the host agreement and the condition photos together.

Our guide to preparing your car to rent out turns the last two into a full checklist. Insurance questions can go to us on WhatsApp or the contact page before you apply.
