No deposit car rental in Malaysia: what you're really agreeing to

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 1 question for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Proton X50

A rental deposit exists to cover what might go wrong: a scrape within the excess, extra kilometres, a fuel tank brought back low, a summons that turns up after the car is back. When a company in Malaysia advertises no deposit car rental, those risks haven't gone anywhere. The useful question is where they've moved to. For Grandpride, the deposit on each car is CHECK: does Grandpride take a deposit on every car, how much by car class, and is there any no-deposit option.

"No deposit means nothing gets held on my card"

Sometimes it does mean that. Sometimes the money is still blocked, just under a different name. A card pre-authorisation is a temporary hold on part of your available balance until the company settles the final bill, and to you it feels exactly like a deposit: that amount isn't available to spend until the hold is released, and on a debit card it's your own money sitting in your bank account.

So ask before you book: will anything be held or charged on my card at pickup, and how much? If the answer is "only a pre-authorisation", ask when it's released. Our guide to renting without a credit card goes through how holds behave on debit cards, transfers and cash.

"No deposit means I'm not liable for damage"

A deposit and your liability are two separate things, and mixing them up is the costly mistake. The deposit is money held while a rental is open. Your liability is what you owe if the car is damaged, and that's set by the protection on the rental agreement, whether or not a deposit was taken.

At Grandpride, every rental includes Basic Cover, under which you pay for damage up to the standard excess. A Loss Damage Waiver lowers that excess, and Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft, with glass and tyres included. The price of each level depends on the car and shows when you book. A company with no deposit and a large excess can leave you owing far more than a company that holds a deposit and sells you zero excess. Our guide to car rental insurance and excess explains the three levels.

"No deposit is the cheaper deal"

Compare the total for your dates, not the headline. The things that move the total are the daily rate, the protection you choose, the mileage you need and any delivery fee. A no-deposit offer may carry a non-refundable fee in place of the refundable deposit, and that's money you don't get back even if the car comes back perfect. Ask whether any part of the price is a fee for waiving the deposit.

Grandpride shows the price itemised before you reserve, with no tax line added on top. Every rental includes 120 km a day, and the +50 km, +100 km and unlimited mileage packages are priced in the booking, so you see the whole number before deciding. For an everyday car with a small total, a Proton X50 runs RM 600 a day.

"If they don't want a deposit, they must be confident and legitimate"

A deposit policy tells you nothing about whether a company is real. The risk to watch for is a listing that asks you to transfer money to secure a car you haven't seen, from a business you can't visit. Before paying anyone anything, check the company has a registered name and number, a physical address you could walk into and a phone that someone answers. Our guide to avoiding car rental scams in Malaysia has the full list of warning signs.

As a comparison point, booking online with Grandpride takes a RM 50 booking fee, which comes off your total. It is a booking fee, not a deposit. You reserve on the site, then pay in store or in person when you meet us and the car. Grandpride Luxury Travel Sdn. Bhd. is company no. 201801035116, and the showroom is at Lot 5A, Jalan 13/2, Section 13, Petaling Jaya.

Things people ask

Which car rental does not require a deposit?

Some companies advertise it. Ask each one what replaces it: a card hold, a waiver fee, a higher rate or a higher excess. For Grandpride's deposit on a particular car, ask us before you book.

What's the lowest deposit for a car rental?

There's no standard figure in Malaysia: each company sets its own. Compare quotes for the same kind of car, and read our guide to how rental deposits work for the refund side.

If something goes wrong on a no-deposit rental, who pays?

You do, up to whatever the rental agreement and your protection level say. No deposit only means the company collects after the event instead of holding money beforehand. If you disagree with a charge and can't settle it with the company, the Tribunal for Consumer Claims under KPDN hears consumer claims of up to RM 50,000 (as at 2026).
