A supercar's price in Malaysia is the car plus a stack of taxes, and then a second stack of bills every year you keep it. The sticker is the part people talk about. The yearly part decides whether owning makes sense for how often you'd drive it. Below are five things people get wrong about supercar prices here, then a way to do the sum for yourself against renting, where Grandpride's supercars start from RM 2,800 a day for an Audi R8.
What people get wrong
"The price is mostly the car"
An imported supercar carries import duty on fully built-up cars from outside ASEAN, an excise duty that rises with engine capacity, and sales tax on top. Big engines sit in the highest excise band. That's why the same car costs far more here than in its home market, and why the asking price in a Malaysian showroom is the number to work from, not a price you saw abroad.
"Road tax is a small fee"
Not for big engines. JPJ's road tax for a private car above 3,000cc in Peninsular Malaysia is a base amount plus a charge for every cc over 3,000, so a V8, V10 or V12 pays many times what a 2.0-litre family car does. Since 1 January 2026 electric cars are charged by motor output in kW instead. Check the exact figure for the engine size on MyJPJ before you commit, and read our guide to road tax renewal.
"Insurance works like any car's"
Comprehensive cover is priced on what the car is insured for, so a high-value car carries a high premium. The No Claim Discount for private cars runs from 25% to 55%, and one claim resets it to zero at the next renewal. So a small claim, say a kerbed wheel or a scraped splitter, also costs you the discount on next year's premium. Ask an insurer for a quote on the exact model before you buy, not after.
"You'll sell it for close to what you paid"
What you get back is set by the used market on the day you sell, plus the car's mileage, history and condition. You don't control any of those. Our guide to car depreciation in Malaysia explains which cars lose value fastest and why.
"Renting means settling for less car"
Renting puts the same cars under you. At Grandpride:
| Car | Day rate |
|---|---|
| Audi R8 | RM 2,800 |
| Nissan GT-R35 | RM 2,800 |
| Lamborghini Huracán | From RM 6,100 |
| Ferrari 458 Italia | RM 7,200 |
| McLaren 570S | RM 8,800 |
| McLaren 720S | From RM 7,700 |
| Lamborghini Aventador | From RM 8,800 |

Do the sum with your own numbers
Write down how many days a year you'd drive the car for fun. Be honest: weekends you're free, minus rain, minus the weekends the car would sit because the traffic's bad. Then fill in both columns with real quotes.
| Owning, per year | Renting, per year |
|---|---|
| Financing cost, or the return your cash would have earned elsewhere | Day rate × the days you drive |
| Road tax for the engine size | Extra mileage options, if 120 km a day isn't enough |
| Comprehensive insurance | Protection: Basic Cover is included; LDW or Protection+ cost extra |
| Servicing, tyres and brakes | Fuel, returned at the same level |
| Secure parking at home | Tolls, on a Touch 'n Go card you load yourself |
| Depreciation: purchase price minus likely resale, divided by years kept | Nothing to sell at the end |
Our guide to the cost of owning a car in Malaysia explains each ownership line in more detail.
The fewer days you drive, the more the owning column is made of fixed costs that don't care whether the car moves. If the answer is a handful of weekends a year, the renting column also lets you change car each time: an R8 for a birthday, a 720S for an anniversary, a Huracán for a long Sunday drive.
Renting a supercar, the practical side
You book online, pay a RM 50 booking fee that comes off the total, and pay the rest in store or in person. Every rental includes 120 km a day. Protection decides what you'd pay if something happens: under Basic Cover you cover damage up to the standard excess, the Loss Damage Waiver lowers it, and Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft, glass and tyres included. For a first supercar day, Protection+ is the one we'd pick. A deposit applies CHECK: deposit amount for supercars and how it's taken.
If it's your first time in a mid-engined car, read how to drive a supercar the first time and start with the R8 or a Huracán rather than the Aventador. The supercar rental guide covers the rest.
