Leave PJ at about 5 am. Broga Hill is about 40 km from central KL, on the Selangor–Negeri Sembilan border outside Semenyih, and the climb to the first peak takes 30 minutes to an hour. Sunrise in the Klang Valley falls between about 6.56 am and 7.26 am depending on the month, so a 5 am start puts you on the trail in the dark with time to spare. Bring a torch.
The morning, hour by hour
4.45 am. Coffee, torch, water, shoes. Shoes beat slippers: people do climb the main hill in slippers, but rain makes it slippery and the weather can turn.
5.00 am. Leave PJ. Put Bukit Broga, Jalan Broga, Semenyih, into Waze or Google Maps; there's no train or bus that gets you there for sunrise, so driving is the way.
5.50 am. Park at the foot of the hill. Broga is on private land, and there are small charges for parking, entry and the toilets.
6.00 am. Start up. The main trail is easy to moderate and clearly marked. Bukit Broga itself is about 400 m above sea level and has three peaks.
6.45 am. At the top, before the sky starts to change.
7.30 am. Head down while it's still cool. The stall near the trail sells cold coconut drinks.
8.30 am. Breakfast in Semenyih on the way home.
Going further
Past Bukit Broga, the ridge continues to Gunung Tok Wan, about 4 km and roughly 1.5 hours on, and Puncak 18 another 1.2 km beyond that. Both are in forest, so there's no panoramic valley view from either, and the extra distance means you'll be walking in the heat on the way back. For sunrise, the first peak is the one.
Which car
It's about 40 km each way from central KL on ordinary roads, so any car does it, and the round trip fits inside the 120 km a day that every Grandpride rental includes.
For two of you, the BMW Z4 at RM 1,500 a day is the one we'd pick. Drive there with the roof up, then put it down for the run home at 8 am, before the sun gets high. Our convertible rental guide lists the other open-top cars. For a group of hikers, a Toyota Harrier from RM 600 takes five and the muddy shoes. If nobody wants to drive at 5 am, a chauffeur by the hour can take the group, from three hours, though hours that start before 7 am cost 50% more.
One practical point: Grandpride's showroom opens at 9 am (10 am on Sundays), so for a 5 am start, collect the car the evening before or have it delivered: free within 10 km of the PJ showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Only the named renter drives, and the car goes back with the fuel level it had at collection.
Small print for Broga
Is Broga Hill open every day?
It's listed as open 24 hours. It's on private property, though, so arrangements can change. Before a big group hike, call the Hulu Langat District Office, which Visit Selangor lists as the contact, to check.
Is Broga Hill good for beginners?
The main trail to the first peak is easy to moderate and takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on fitness. Avoid it after heavy rain, when the slope is slippery.
Can I camp on Broga?
Visitors do camp overnight near Gunung Tok Wan and Puncak 18, where the mornings are often misty. Ask the district office about the current rules before you plan a night up there.
