Within two hours of Kuala Lumpur by car you have cool hill air, the Selangor and Negeri Sembilan coast, a handful of food towns and an elephant centre. For most day trips from KL by car, the practical question on a Grandpride rental is mileage: 120 km a day is included, and you can add 50 km, 100 km or unlimited. Nearest first:

Distances are rough and start from central KL. From Petaling Jaya, add a little for anything north or east of the city. The +50 package gives 170 km for the day and +100 gives 220 km; over that, each kilometre is charged at the car's own rate, which you see when you book. If a trip sits near the edge of a package, take the next one up, or unlimited, which costs less per kilometre than paying afterwards.
If you want...
Cool air without a long drive: Janda Baik or Bukit Tinggi, both under an hour up the Karak Highway. Genting is higher and busier. Fraser's Hill is the quiet one, and the slow climb from The Gap is half the day.
The sea: Port Dickson is the easy beach. Tanjung Sepat is the better food stop, with the sea as the backdrop. The fireflies at Kuala Selangor are the one trip that starts in the late afternoon and ends after dark.
Food: Seremban is the shortest food run from KL, an hour south for beef noodles and siew pau. Tanjung Sepat is pau and seafood. Melaka is the long day, and Ipoh, about 205 km north, is a day trip only if you don't mind five or six hours of driving; our KL to Ipoh by car guide covers the day trip and the overnight version.
Children: Kuala Gandah is the stand-out, if they can manage two hours in the car each way. Putrajaya's lake and parks are the gentle, short option.
Something active: Kuala Kubu Bharu has white-water rafting and tandem paragliding, an hour from the city.
Choosing the car
Match the car to the last part of the drive. Village lanes and narrow hill roads suit a compact SUV; the coast and Seremban suit anything comfortable. If it's two of you and the point is the Karak Highway climb to Genting or Bukit Tinggi on a dry morning, the Porsche 992 Carrera 4S, at RM 6,100 a day, has four-wheel drive and two small rear seats for the bags. Browse the full fleet for an SUV, something open-topped for the coast, or a bigger car for a group.
Only the person named on the booking may drive a Grandpride self-drive car, and the fuel goes back at the level it left with. For a group where nobody wants to drive, or a long day like Melaka or Kuala Gandah, a chauffeur booked by the hour (3 to 23 hours) does the driving; request one on Book a chauffeur at least two days ahead. Our guide to one-day car rental in Kuala Lumpur explains how a single-day booking works, and for trips that need a night away, see weekend getaways from KL by car.
Things people ask
What's the easiest day trip from KL by car?
Putrajaya or Batu Caves if you want to stay close. For a proper day out, Janda Baik, Bukit Tinggi and Seremban are each under an hour of easy highway.
Can you do Melaka as a day trip from KL by car?
Yes. It's about 145 km, two hours each way, which leaves five or six hours in the old town. A rental needs unlimited mileage for it.
How many kilometres do I need for a day trip?
Count the round trip plus 20 to 30 km for driving around at the other end. Up to 120 km, the included allowance is enough; up to 170 km, add 50 km; up to 220 km, add 100 km; past that, choose unlimited.
