i-City Shah Alam by car: an evening plan

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Mercedes-Benz SLK 250

Go to i-City Shah Alam after dark, not before. It sits beside the Federal Highway in Section 7, Shah Alam, and its City of Digital Lights, a park lit by more than a million LED lights, only comes on in the evening. From the Klang Valley it's a short drive, so leave late afternoon, eat in the mall, and walk the lights once it's fully dark.

i-City opened in 2002 and is now a cluster of attractions around a mall. Besides the lights there's SnoWalk (an indoor ice-sculpture hall kept below 5 °C), WaterWorld (an outdoor water park), the Red Carpet wax museum and a trick-art museum, and Central i-City, a six-level mall with around 350 stores.

Getting there

i-City is signposted from four highways: the Federal Highway, the NKVE, KESAS and the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. From PJ the Federal Highway is the obvious one, heading west towards Shah Alam and Klang; from the north of the Klang Valley the NKVE or Guthrie make more sense. Put "i-City" or "Central i-City" into Waze or Google Maps; the address is Jalan Multimedia 7/AJ.

On a weekday, time the drive around the evening rush, when the Federal Highway between PJ and Shah Alam is at its slowest. Our guide to the best times to drive in KL has the pattern.

If you'd rather come by train, the LRT Shah Alam Line opened on 29 June 2026, and its Seksyen 7 Shah Alam station is around 300 m from i-City. The nearest KTM Komuter stop is Padang Jawa, about ten minutes away by car.

An evening, start to finish

  1. 4.30 pm, leave PJ, ahead of the evening rush.
  2. 5.00 pm, park at Central i-City. Mall parking is the simplest base; note your level and entrance.
  3. 5.30 pm, SnoWalk or the wax museum, if you have children or visitors who want an indoor hour. Bring a light jacket for SnoWalk, and check whether tickets need to be bought online in advance.
  4. 7.00 pm, dinner in the mall.
  5. 8.00 pm, the City of Digital Lights, once the sky is fully dark. Walk it slowly and leave the photos until you've seen the whole park.
  6. 9.30 pm, back to the car. The Federal Highway is clear by now, and it's a quick run home.

Check the current opening hours and which attractions are running on i-City's own site before you set off. Hours have changed over the years, and the light park and the paid attractions don't keep the same times.

Parking tips

Mall parking gives you a covered space and a short walk to the lights. Weekend evenings are busier, and arriving before sunset gives you the pick of the bays. Rates change; read the signs at the entrance. If you're in a long or low car, take the ramps slowly.

The car for a night out

A warm evening in Shah Alam is a good reason to rent a convertible; convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur compares the three in the fleet. Put the roof down on the way home, once the heat has gone. The Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 is RM 1,000 a day, and the BMW Z4 and Mitsuoka Rock Star are on the convertible list. The 120 km a day included in the rate covers i-City and back from anywhere in the Klang Valley. Only the named renter drives, and the car goes back with the fuel level it had at collection.

For a family of six, take an MPV instead, or leave the driving to someone else: a chauffeur by the hour waits while you walk the lights, from 3 hours, with hours that start from 7 pm at 30% more. Our KL night drive with a chauffeur adds the city's other night views to the same evening.
