KL to Penang by car is about 355 km, central Kuala Lumpur to George Town, and from Petaling Jaya it's about the same. That's roughly four hours of driving without heavy traffic and nearer five with a couple of stops. It's one long highway north and a bridge across, with no turns to remember until Penang. In a rental, take unlimited mileage; the drive day alone is longer than any package.
Berapa jam dari KL ke Penang dengan kereta? Kira-kira empat jam tanpa kesesakan untuk 355 km, atau hampir lima jam jika berhenti rehat dua kali.
The route
The whole way is the E1, the northern route of the North–South Expressway, run by PLUS.
| Heading north | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rawang rest area | Just past Rawang | Useful if you left without breakfast |
| Tapah rest and service area | About 145 km from KL | Both sides; the natural first break |
| Ipoh Vista Point | Just north of Ipoh, before the Menora Tunnel | Northbound only. Ipoh, about 205 km from KL, is just past halfway |
| Sungai Perak rest area | After Ipoh | Both sides; the second break for most drivers |
| Gunung Semanggol rest and service area | After Taiping | Both sides; the last big stop before the island |
| Penang bridges | About 355 km to George Town | Pick the bridge by where you're staying |
Distances are rounded; use a live map on the day for traffic and the right exit for your hotel.
Two breaks suit most drivers: Tapah, about 40% of the way, and somewhere after Ipoh. If you'd rather eat properly than at a rest area, come off at an Ipoh exit for lunch in town and rejoin after. KL to Ipoh by car suggests where. With a day to spare, break it with a night in the hills; KL to Cameron Highlands by car explains the climb from Tapah or Simpang Pulai.
What catches people out
- The first hour. Leaving the Klang Valley is what decides the time. Friday afternoons, public holiday eves and the start of the school holidays are the slow ones, and that first hour can take twice as long. Leave early in the morning or after the evening peak and the rest of the expressway usually moves. KL traffic and the best times to drive covers the patterns.
- Mileage. A Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, with +50 km, +100 km or unlimited on top. The drive day is about 355 km; even +100 gives you 220. A four-day trip is about 710 km there and back before you drive anywhere on the island. Take unlimited, which costs less per kilometre than paying the car's per-km rate afterwards. Rental mileage and toll cards sets the packages side by side.
- One driver. Only the named renter may drive a Grandpride self-drive car, so you can't swap at Tapah. Stop at least every two hours.
- The bridge. Penang Bridge, about 13.5 km, runs from Perai to Gelugor on the island's east side: take it for George Town, Tanjung Bungah and Batu Ferringhi. The second bridge, the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, is about 24 km including its link road, from Batu Kawan to Batu Maung in the south, and suits hotels near the airport and the southern coast. Both come straight off the E1.
- Tolls. Every plaza is cashless. Most of the route is a closed system: you tap in at the first plaza and pay by distance at the exit. The bridge toll is charged only towards the island; coming back you pay none. Rates change, so check the current figure on PLUS's website or app rather than an old number. Malaysian tolls, Touch 'n Go and RFID explains the payment side. Grandpride can hand you a Touch 'n Go card with the keys, loaded with anything from RM 50 to RM 500, and you pay what you load; for Penang and back, load towards the top.
- Fuel. The car goes back at the level you collected it. Fill up on the way home, not in the last kilometre.
- Starting or ending in Penang. The car stays in Peninsular Malaysia, which Penang is part of, but delivery outside the Klang Valley is by special request and quote. Ask before you book if you need the car anywhere other than PJ or the Klang Valley.
The car
For four hours each way, a comfortable saloon is worth paying for. The BMW 740Li (2021) is RM 3,300 a day and you arrive without stiff legs; there are more in the limousines in the fleet. For a family with luggage, a Toyota Alphard is from RM 1,000 a day. Everything else is on the full rental list.
Or be driven
Eight hours at the wheel in a weekend is a lot for one person. A Grandpride chauffeur does one-way trips priced on distance, an hourly base plus a per-kilometre charge, with the full price shown before you reserve online at least two days ahead. If you want the chauffeur to stay in Penang and drive you back, ask first CHECK: are multi-day out-of-town chauffeur trips offered, and how are the chauffeur's overnight stay and waiting days charged?. Private drivers from KL to other cities compares the options.
