For a first EV road trip in Malaysia, KL to Penang is the one to do. It's about 350 to 370 km, almost all of it on the North–South Expressway, and there are DC fast chargers at R&Rs and lay-bys most of the way up. Leave with a full battery, plan one charging stop, and know two backups in case your first choice is busy or broken.
The night before
- Charge to 90% or more. Starting high buys you the choice of where to stop, which matters most on weekends and public holidays when the chargers are busiest.
- Install the apps and add a card. PLUS's highway chargers are run through Gentari Go, JomCharge and ChargEV. Register on all three at home. Our guide to EV charging in Malaysia explains how a session works.
- Sort the mileage. Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day. A return trip to Penang is well over 700 km before you've driven around the island, so add unlimited mileage when you book; it's cheaper per km than paying for the extra afterwards. Our guide to mileage and the toll card does the maths for other trips.
- Check the car's real starting range. The brochure figure is a test result. What the car shows at handover, fully charged, is the number to plan from CHECK: the charge level an EV is delivered at and should be returned at.
A plan for the day
Times assume you leave PJ at 7.30 am and the expressway is moving. Add an hour or more on a Friday afternoon or before a holiday.
7.30 am: leave Petaling Jaya. NKVE to Bukit Lanjan, where it becomes the North–South Expressway northern route. You stay on it almost to the Penang bridges.
About 9 am: Behrang lay-by, northbound. The first DC option after the Klang Valley, on Gentari's network with charging up to 200 kW. If you left full, drive past. If you started low, top up here rather than gamble on the next one.
About 9.30 am: Tapah R&R. A good place for coffee and the toilets. Don't plan to charge here unless your app shows a working, compatible charger on the day.
About 10.30 am: PETRONAS Sungai Perak R&R. The main charging stop: a DC charger on Gentari's network, plus food, toilets and a prayer room. Charge to around 80% and no further, since charging slows as the battery fills. Twenty to thirty minutes is typical on a car that charges quickly, which is about as long as a coffee and something to eat.
If Sungai Perak is full, MK Land Bukit Merah is the alternative DC site a little further north on the same network.
About 12 noon: PETRONAS Juru lay-by. The last top-up before Penang, with a charger rated up to 180 kW. Only stop if your percentage looks thin for driving around the island.
About 12.30 pm: onto the island. The Penang Bridge lands near George Town; the Second Penang Bridge, from Batu Kawan, lands in the south near the airport. Both charge a toll only on the way to the island. Our KL to Penang by car guide covers the rest of the route and the bridges in detail.
Coming back, run the same plan in reverse, and check live charger status before you leave Penang rather than at the R&R.
Taycan or i7
Grandpride has two fully electric cars, and both can make the trip with one stop.
The Porsche Taycan at RM 3,900 a day is the driver's car. It charges quickly on a powerful DC unit, but expressway speed and a hot afternoon eat into range faster than the brochure suggests, so plan on stopping.
The BMW i7 at RM 3,300 a day is the long-legged one, with an official range of roughly 580 to 610 km at launch, and the bigger cabin: five seats and room for two large suitcases. For four adults and their luggage, it's the sensible pick. Our EV rental guide compares the two in more detail.
Remember that only the named renter can drive a Grandpride self-drive car, so all 360 km are yours. Treat the charging stop as your rest stop.
Things people ask
How do electric cars travel long distances in Malaysia?
The same way petrol cars do, with planned stops. The North–South Expressway has DC fast chargers at R&Rs, lay-bys and petrol stations, and a compatible car can reach about 80% in 15 to 30 minutes. You plan the stop in an app instead of looking for the next petrol station.
Can an EV do KL to Penang on one charge?
Some can, on paper. In practice, with air-conditioning on and expressway speeds, plan on one stop, and two in heavy traffic or rain.
Can I take the EV over to Singapore or Thailand afterwards?
Not in a Grandpride car. Rentals stay in Peninsular Malaysia, which includes Penang.
Can someone else drive us there?
Yes. The i7 is also a chauffeur car, and one-way chauffeur trips are priced on distance, so you can be dropped in Penang and fly back. Chauffeur bookings need at least two days' notice.
