KL to Taman Negara by car means driving to Kuala Tahan, the village on the Tembeling River opposite the park headquarters. It's around 230 to 240 km, about four hours, and you should plan on four to five once you count getting out of KL. You can drive all the way. What you can't do is drive into the park: the car stays in Kuala Tahan and a small boat takes you across.
Two nights is the right length. One night means eight hours in the car for one afternoon in the forest.
Day 1
- 7.00 am, leave PJ. Take the KL–Karak Expressway east through the Genting Sempah tunnel. It runs on as the East Coast Expressway past Karak, with tolls on the Touch 'n Go card.
- 8.30 am, Temerloh R&R. The rest and service area on the expressway, for breakfast and the toilet stop before the trunk roads.
- 9.00 am, leave the expressway towards Temerloh and head north for Jerantut.
- 10.00 am, Jerantut. The last proper town. Fill the tank, buy anything you forgot (insect repellent, a rain jacket, cash), and stretch.
- 10.15 am, the last stretch. Jerantut to Kuala Tahan is about 67 km and a little over an hour. The road is more rural than anything before it: slower, narrower, villages and bends. Drive it in daylight.
- 11.30 am, Kuala Tahan. If your guesthouse has its own parking, drive straight to it. If you're staying at Mutiara Taman Negara on the park side, or going into the park, use the gated, guarded car park run by the local community, under five minutes' walk from the jetty. It charges by the day.
- Cross the river. There's no bridge. A small boat crosses the Tembeling in a couple of minutes and runs often through the day, for a small fare per person.
- Afternoon: check in, then a short trail near headquarters. Ask your guesthouse which guided walks and boat trips are running for the next day.
Day 2
A full day in the park. Start early, before the heat, and carry water. The car stays where it is.
Day 3
- 9.00 am, leave Kuala Tahan after breakfast, back through Jerantut and onto the expressway.
- Late morning, an optional stop: the Kuala Gandah elephant centre is off the same expressway at the Lanchang exit. Check its session times the day before, since the sessions people come for are in the afternoon.
- Home in PJ by late afternoon, before the Sunday evening build-up at Gombak if it's a weekend.
Is the road to Kuala Tahan suitable for any car?
The route is on public paved roads, and the drive is generally straightforward. The final section after Jerantut is rural, which suits a car with decent ground clearance and comfortable seats more than a low sports car. An SUV such as the Range Rover Sport at RM 2,000 a day, or a Toyota Harrier from RM 600, is the right sort of car. The SUV list has more.
When shouldn't you drive there?
Heavy rain, especially in the northeast monsoon from November to March, can bring flooding and road closures in this part of Pahang. Check the weather and road conditions the day before, and be ready to move the dates. Our guide to driving in the monsoon season explains what to look for, and why you don't drive into floodwater you can't see the bottom of.
How much mileage do I need?
PJ to Kuala Tahan and back is roughly 480 km, plus whatever you drive locally, against 120 km a day included in a Grandpride rental.
| Trip | Included | Add | Gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two days, one night | 240 km | Unlimited | No limit |
| Three days, two nights | 360 km | +100 km a day | 660 km |
Unlimited costs less per kilometre than paying the car's own per-km rate afterwards. Bring the car back with the same fuel level it had at collection; Jerantut on the way home is the place to fill up.
Can someone share the driving?
Not on a self-drive car. Only the named renter may drive a Grandpride rental, so four to five hours each way falls on one person. If that's too much, a chauffeur can take you one way, priced on distance, and come back for you on another date CHECK: how a return pickup on a later date is priced on a long one-way chauffeur trip. Other weekend getaways from KL by car are shorter if a day at each end of the trip is more driving than you want.
