A weekend getaway from KL by car: pick by who's going

Bentley Continental GT

For a weekend getaway from KL by car, keep the drive under about four hours each way and stay two nights. Any further and Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon disappear into the car. Inside that limit you can reach the hills, both coasts, Ipoh and Penang for food, and a theme park. Which one depends mostly on who's in the car.

Just the two of you

Cool air and not much to do is the classic short getaway from KL for couples. Fraser's Hill is about 100 km away but feels much further: an old hill station with walks, birds and no theme parks, best with a night so you get the cool evening and the early morning. Cameron Highlands, 200 to 210 km and three and a half to four hours, is bigger and busier, with tea estates and more places to eat.

For a romantic getaway with less driving, a riverside villa in Janda Baik is under an hour away. If the weekend is the start of something longer, our honeymoon road trip guide strings several of these together.

This is also the weekend for a car you'd never commute in. The Bentley Continental GT, at RM 4,400 a day, is a grand tourer, built for long, fast, comfortable drives like this. Keep low cars for the expressway destinations; the narrow single-lane climb at Fraser's Hill is easier in a compact SUV.

With children

Legoland Malaysia, about 330 km south in Iskandar Puteri, is three and a half to four hours away and needs two nights to make the drive fair on everyone. Desaru Coast, around 380 to 390 km, adds a waterpark and beach resorts, best between April and October before the monsoon.

Closer to home, Port Dickson is an hour or so from the city: a beach weekend without a long drive. Remember the child seat law applies in a rental car as much as your own; our guide to child seat rules in Malaysia has the details.

Families need space more than speed. A seven-seat SUV or an MPV is the sensible choice; browse the SUVs in the fleet, or compare the bigger cars in our guide to seven-seater car rental.

For the food

Ipoh, about 205 km and two and a half to three hours north, is the obvious food weekend: dinner and breakfast in town are the reason to stay the night. Penang, about 355 km and four hours or more, sits right at the limit; it suits a long weekend better than a two-night one. Melaka, 145 km south, is a day trip that becomes a better trip with a night in the old town.

Taiping, further north than Ipoh, has its lake gardens and Maxwell Hill, and makes a quieter food-and-walking weekend.

For the sea, with a long weekend

The east coast needs more time. Kuantan is on the South China Sea, over the Main Range on the Karak Highway and the East Coast Expressway. Kuala Terengganu is about 440 km from KL; our guide to driving to Terengganu covers that run. If you have five days or more, the east coast road trip via Cherating links them up. From November to around March the northeast monsoon brings days of heavy rain to that coast, so plan the east for the drier months.

Mileage over a weekend

Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, and you can add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited. Size it to your longest driving day, not the average CHECK: is the 120 km/day allowance pooled across the rental period or counted per day.

  • Janda Baik or Bukit Tinggi: each leg is about 60 to 70 km from PJ, so the included 120 km a day is usually enough.
  • Port Dickson: each leg is about 100 to 115 km from PJ, so add 50 km a day and local driving won't push you over.
  • Fraser's Hill: the drive up and down are each about 110 to 130 km from PJ, so +50 km a day.
  • Anywhere 200 km or more away (Cameron Highlands, Ipoh, Legoland, Desaru, Penang, the east coast): choose unlimited. Even +100 km gives only 220 km a day, and the drive days are longer than that.

Unlimited, chosen when you book, costs less per kilometre than paying for the extra afterwards.

Collection and the drive home

Grandpride delivers to your door: free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. On Friday that means you can leave from home instead of crossing town first. Our guide to weekend car rental in KL goes through the timing.

The showroom closes at 8 pm on Sundays, so if you're returning the car there, leave your destination early enough to beat both the traffic and the closing time CHECK: whether pickups and returns outside opening hours can be arranged. Only the named renter drives, and the fuel needle should be back where it started.
