KLIA to Ipoh: train, bus or private car

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 4 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

KLIA to Ipoh is about 240 km by road, around 2 hours 40 minutes in a car. There's no fast public option straight from the airport: the train means changing at KL Sentral, and the direct bus takes three to four hours or more. If you land with family and luggage, a private car is the simplest way to go. If you're alone with a backpack, the train is the better deal.

Times are without long waits. The train figure assumes you walk off the KLIA Ekspres and onto an ETS soon after, so book the ETS seat in advance rather than at the station. Buses run from the airport to Ipoh's Amanjaya or Meru Raya terminals, with several operators sharing the route.

Which one to pick

Take the train if you're one or two adults with light bags and you land in daylight. The KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral from Terminal 1 in about 30 minutes, and ETS trains run north to Ipoh from there.

Take the bus if cost is the only thing that matters and you don't mind arriving at a bus terminal and finding a ride from there.

Take a private car if any of these apply:

  • Three or more people, or children, or someone who struggles with stairs and platforms.
  • More than one large suitcase each.
  • A landing after the last convenient train. Our guide to late-night KLIA arrivals covers the options at that hour.
  • The address in Ipoh, or beyond it in Perak, is nowhere near a station.

How a one-way chauffeur to Ipoh is priced

Grandpride's flat KLIA fares only cover trips under 80 km, so Ipoh is priced as a one-way trip on distance: a base built on the car's hourly rate, plus a charge per kilometre. The booking page works out the full price for every free car before you reserve CHECK: per-km rate for each chauffeur car on a KLIA to Ipoh run, and whether the driver's empty return is included.

What comes with it:

  • Meet and greet at KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, with a nameboard at arrivals if you ask for one. Our KLIA meet and greet guide shows how the pickup works.
  • Flight monitoring when you add your flight number, so a late flight moves the pickup instead of starting a wait.
  • Booking for someone else, if you're arranging the car for a parent or a visitor.

Online bookings need at least two days' notice. You pay a RM 50 booking fee online, which comes off the total, and the rest in store or in person CHECK: how a customer arriving from abroad pays the balance for an airport pickup. Whether night surcharges apply to a one-way distance fare after a late landing is CHECK: do the 7 pm–11 pm and 11 pm–7 am surcharges apply to one-way distance-priced trips.

Which car for the run north

Toyota Vellfire73RM 150

A family with luggage goes in an Alphard or Vellfire. Two business travellers with cabin bags fit the S-Class or the i7. The full list is on the chauffeur page.

If you'd rather drive

Self-drive is possible too, though Grandpride's KLIA store isn't open yet, so the car comes from Petaling Jaya CHECK: delivery charge and lead time for a self-drive car handed over at KLIA. The road is the North-South Expressway most of the way; our KL to Ipoh drive guide covers the exits and stops, and our page on self-drive cars at KLIA explains the handover.
