If your flight lands at 1.15 am, by the time you've cleared immigration and found your bags the airport train has probably stopped for the night. For a KLIA late night arrival, that leaves three ways into Kuala Lumpur: the official airport taxi, an e-hailing car, or a car you booked before you flew. Which one is right depends on when you land, who you're travelling with and how much luggage you have.

The deadline: the last train

The KLIA Ekspres runs from about 5 am. The last trains in the regular timetable leave for KL Sentral around midnight, and an extended late service, stopping at every station, runs from the airport until about 1 am. Check the operator's timetable for your date, because a delayed flight can turn a train arrival into a taxi one. The train takes about 28 minutes to KL Sentral, and from there you still need a ride to your hotel.

If, then

If you land well before midnight, travel light and your hotel is close to KL Sentral: take the train. It's quick, and at that hour it's the simplest option.

If you land after the trains have stopped and you're on your own with a carry-on: the official airport taxi works on a coupon system, with fixed fares by destination bought at the counter, so there's no meter and no haggling at 2 am. E-hailing apps also serve the airport. Either is fine for one person with one bag.

If you're a family, a group, or carrying more than two large suitcases: book a car before you fly. At night, after a long flight, finding a taxi big enough for five people and their bags is not something to leave to chance. Grandpride's MPVs, the Toyota Alphard, Vellfire and Lexus LM, each have seven seats and room for three large cases.

If your flight is the kind that runs late: book a chauffeur and add the flight number. Grandpride monitors the flight and adjusts the pickup, so a two-hour delay doesn't leave you calling around at 3 am.

If you're booking for someone else (a parent travelling alone, say, or a client): book the car in their name. Tick "I'm booking for someone else", add their name and number, and the chauffeur contacts them directly on the day. Put their name in the arrival-board field and that's what the chauffeur holds up when they walk out. Our guide to KLIA meet and greet shows how the pickup works at both terminals.

If you're worried about the price at that hour: don't be, for the airport run. Grandpride's KLIA and KLIA2 flat fares are the same day or night, from RM 300 in a Vellfire for a trip under 80 km, which covers central KL and Petaling Jaya. On an hourly booking, hours that start between 11 pm and 7 am cost 50% more, so for a late arrival book the airport transfer, not hours.

If you want something quieter for two: the BMW i7 or the S-Class take two large cases, and at that time of night the drive into the city is usually far quicker than it is at rush hour.

If you're landing within the next two days: online bookings need two days' notice. Call or WhatsApp +6010 322 3223 and ask CHECK: can a late-night KLIA pickup be booked by phone or WhatsApp with less than two days' notice?.

If you were planning to pick up a self-drive car: after a long flight in the small hours, think twice about driving unfamiliar roads. If you still want to, our guide to car rental at KLIA explains the options CHECK: can a Grandpride self-drive car be handed over at KLIA after midnight?.

A few things that make 2 am easier

  • Tell your hotel you'll check in late, so the room is held for you.
  • Keep your chauffeur's or the hotel's number handy, and switch your phone to a local SIM or roaming before you leave the plane, so the chauffeur can reach you.
  • If you're stuck at baggage reclaim for a long time, let the chauffeur know, and ask when you book how long the chauffeur waits after landing CHECK: free waiting time after landing, and the charge after that.
  • Use the official taxi counter or a car you booked yourself. Ignore anyone in the hall offering a ride.

For the full fare table and the 80 km rule, see the KLIA transfer guide. If you're on the way out rather than in, how early to leave for KLIA covers the other end of the trip, and you can book either direction on Book a chauffeur.
