KLIA taxi price, Grab or a private car

The KLIA taxi price is fixed by destination: you tell the counter where you're going, pay for a coupon, and hand it to the driver. Grab shows its price in the app before you book, and it moves with demand. A pre-booked private car has a flat fare agreed before you fly. None of the three is always cheapest, so pick by how many of you there are, how much luggage you have and how long you're willing to stand around after a long flight.

How the airport taxi works

At KLIA Terminal 1, airport taxi coupons are sold at counters on Level 3 of the main terminal building, one in the domestic arrivals area and one in international baggage reclaim. You can buy the coupon before you walk out with your bags. The airport taxi service runs on this coupon system with fixed fares by destination, and its cars range from family sedans to larger luxury vehicles, so the price also depends on the size of car you ask for. There's a separate counter on Level 3 for metered city taxis.

The fares are on display at the counter. They change from time to time, so check them there rather than trusting a figure you found online.

How Grab and other e-hailing work at KLIA

Book in the app once you have your bags, then walk to the pick-up area. At Terminal 1 that's Level 1 of the main terminal building, where Malaysia Airports added marked bays, marshals and waiting areas in August 2026. Since September 2026 there are self-service kiosks, and drivers get a grace period of about 10 minutes in the bays, so be ready at the kerb when the app says your car is close. Malaysia Airports also charges e-hailing vehicles an entry fee at both terminals; look at your fare breakdown to see whether it's passed on.

The price is shown before you confirm, but it isn't fixed in advance of the day. At a busy hour or late at night it can be higher, and you may wait longer for a driver to accept. Choose a larger car type in the app if you have more than two big suitcases.

How a pre-booked private car works

You book before you travel, at least two days ahead online, and the price is set at booking. Grandpride charges one flat fare per car to or from KLIA and KLIA2, the same day or night, for trips under 80 km:

CarSeatsLarge suitcasesFlat fare
Toyota Vellfire73RM 300
Toyota Alphard73RM 450
Mercedes-Benz S-Class52RM 600
BMW i752RM 2,300

Add your flight number and Grandpride watches the flight, so a delay doesn't leave you without a car. Ask for a nameboard and your chauffeur waits at arrivals with your name on it; our page on KLIA meet and greet explains where. You can book for someone else, and the chauffeur contacts the passenger directly. You pay a RM 50 booking fee online, which comes off the total, and the rest in store or in person.

Which one to take

  • One person, one bag, daytime, staying near a station: take the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral or a Grab.
  • Two people going to a hotel, not in a hurry: a Grab or an airport taxi. Compare the counter price with the app before you decide.
  • A family with four or more large suitcases: a pre-booked seven-seater, or the largest taxi at the counter. A standard e-hailing car won't take that much.
  • Landing after midnight: a pre-booked car. The flat fare doesn't change at night, and you aren't waiting on a driver to accept. Our guide to late-night KLIA arrivals goes through the options.
  • A client, a parent travelling alone or anyone who shouldn't have to sort out transport after a long flight: a pre-booked car with a nameboard.
  • Going straight from the airport to Genting or further: book a car for that. It's over the 80 km the airport flat fare covers, so it's priced on distance, and our KLIA to Genting transfer guide explains it.

How much is a taxi from KLIA to KL?

It depends on where in KL you're going and which size of car you take. The airport taxi counter shows the fixed fare for each destination before you pay. For a quick comparison, open the Grab app at the same time and see what it quotes.

Is Grab cheaper than a KLIA taxi?

Sometimes. Grab's price changes with demand, the airport taxi's doesn't. At a quiet hour Grab may come out lower; at a busy one the fixed coupon can be better value. Check both on the day.

Do I tip the driver?

There's no obligation. Tipping in Malaysia is optional, and a taxi driver won't expect one; with Grab you can add a tip in the app after the ride. Our guide to tipping drivers in Malaysia covers chauffeurs too.

If you'd rather have it settled before you fly, the chauffeur page lists every car and what the fare includes.
