KL to Legoland Malaysia is about 330 km by car, three and a half to four hours on the North–South Expressway with no long stops. With children in the car, plan on closer to four and a half, and make it at least one night: the drive is too long to do there and back around a day in the park.
The route
Legoland Malaysia Resort is in Iskandar Puteri (formerly Nusajaya), on the west side of Johor Bahru. The address is 7 Jalan Legoland, Bandar Medini Iskandar.
- Take the North–South Expressway south from KL and stay on it for about three hours, towards Johor Bahru.
- Near Senai, leave at exit 253, signposted Tuas, Iskandar Puteri, Pontian and Tanjung Pelepas.
- Take exit 312 for Iskandar Puteri, then follow the Legoland signs. The resort has paid parking.
The road to Tuas leads to the Second Link bridge into Singapore. That's as far as a Grandpride rental goes: rental cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia, so take your exit and don't follow the signs for the border. Our guide to driving a Malaysian rental car to Singapore explains why, and the KL to JB by car guide covers the rest of the drive south if you're adding Johor Bahru to the trip.
The drive day with children
Leave early and arrive by lunch, so the first afternoon goes on the hotel pool or a short walk rather than a meltdown.
- 7.30 am, leave the Klang Valley, before the traffic builds.
- Around 9.30 am, one proper stop at a highway rest area: toilets, breakfast, ten minutes of running about.
- Around 11.30 am, a second short stop if anyone needs it.
- About noon, arrive, park, check in, eat.
The same in reverse on the way home, leaving after breakfast rather than after a full day in the park. Four hours of expressway after a day at a theme park is how tired drivers make mistakes, and on a Grandpride self-drive car only the named renter is allowed to drive, so there's no one to swap with.
Before you leave: a checklist
- Child seats. A child restraint has been compulsory in private cars in Malaysia since 2020; our guide to the child seat law in Malaysia explains who needs one. Bring your own if you can CHECK: can child seats be added to a self-drive rental, which types, and at what price, or should customers bring their own.
- Park tickets and opening days. The resort has a theme park, a water park and a SEA LIFE aquarium. Check its website for what's open on your dates, and book there.
- Where you'll sleep. The Legoland Hotel is on site; there are other hotels around Iskandar Puteri and Johor Bahru.
- Mileage. Choose unlimited (more on this below).
- Tolls. The North–South Expressway is tolled all the way. Add a Touch 'n Go card when you book and load what you need, from RM 50 to RM 500; you pay exactly what you load. Check the current toll on PLUS's website so you load enough for both directions.
- Fuel. Note the gauge when you collect, because the car goes back at the same level.
- Wet bags and towels if the water park is on the list, so swimsuits don't end up on the seats.
- Snacks, water and something to do for the back row.
Which car
For a family with grandparents or two sets of children, an MPV is the obvious answer: sliding doors in a tight car park, and room for a pushchair and the bags. The Toyota Vellfire (2017) costs RM 900 a day CHECK: confirm the seat count of the 2017 Vellfire as configured. See every MPV in the fleet, or our guide to MPV rental in Kuala Lumpur for the differences between them.
A family of four with modest luggage fits a large SUV just as well.
Why unlimited mileage
Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, with +50 km, +100 km or unlimited available. The drive day alone is about 330 km, well past even the +100 package's 220 km, and a two-night trip comes to roughly 700 km once you add driving around Iskandar Puteri. Choose unlimited; it costs less per kilometre than paying for the distance afterwards.
Or let someone else drive
A chauffeur takes the eight hours of driving off your hands, and everyone, including the parents, can sleep. Long one-way trips are priced on distance, and an MPV like the Toyota Alphard with chauffeur takes three large suitcases CHECK: are multi-day out-of-town chauffeur trips offered, and how are the chauffeur's overnight stay and waiting days charged?. Book online at least two days ahead.
Before you book
How long does it take to drive from KL to Legoland Malaysia?
About three and a half to four hours for roughly 330 km, without long stops. With children and two breaks, allow four and a half.
Can we drive on to Singapore afterwards?
Not in a Grandpride rental. The cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia, so plan the Singapore leg separately.
Is there a train instead?
Yes. The KTM ETS runs from KL Sentral to JB Sentral in about four hours twenty, then it's 20 to 25 minutes by car to the resort. Check times on KTMB's website. With children and luggage, the door-to-door car is usually simpler.
