No. A rental car from Malaysia to Singapore isn't possible with Grandpride: our self-drive cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia, so they can't use either land crossing into Singapore, and they can't go into Thailand either. You can drive as far south as Johor Bahru, though, and cross from there by train, or skip the drive and fly.
Why won't rental companies let the car cross?
The paperwork belongs to the car and its owner, and for a rental the owner is the rental company. As at 2026, Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) requires a Malaysia-registered car to have:
- a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) valid for the whole time the car is in Singapore, with LTA's approval email to show on request;
- an Autopass card, applied for at least two weeks before travel, encoded with that one vehicle's details and not transferable;
- insurance valid for the whole stay that meets Singapore's third-party requirements;
- valid road tax, proper number plates, and the registration certificate if officers ask for it.
Add insurance, recovery after a breakdown and who answers for fines on the other side of a border, and it's easy to see why many Malaysian rental companies don't allow cross-border travel at all. Grandpride is one of them.
What if another company says yes?
Some may offer it with the paperwork arranged. If you go that way, get the permission in writing, find out who arranges the VEP and the Autopass, and confirm the protection still applies once you're in Singapore. Drive across without permission and you may be uninsured and in breach of the rental agreement.
So how do I get from KL to Singapore?
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Fly from KLIA | A chauffeur to KLIA Terminal 1 or 2 for a flat fare, from RM 300 in a Toyota Vellfire (trips under 80 km, day or night) | The quickest door to door for most people |
| ETS train to JB, then cross | The electric ETS runs KL Sentral to JB Sentral in about four hours 20 minutes; KTM's Shuttle Tebrau crosses to Woodlands Train Checkpoint | No driving at all |
| Chauffeur to Johor Bahru | One way, priced on distance (an hourly base plus a per-km charge); the booking page shows the full price for each car | Families with luggage who want to be dropped at the border |
| Drive yourself to Johor | Any Grandpride car can go anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia, Johor included | A road trip south with Singapore as a side visit |
Flying is the one we'd pick unless you have a reason to be on the road. The KLIA transfer by private chauffeur compares the cars and fares for the airport run.
A new cross-border rail line, the RTS Link between Johor Bahru and Woodlands, will add another way over once it opens. Check its status before you plan around it.
For the chauffeur option, a private driver from KL to other cities explains how long one-way trips are priced.
If I drive myself to Johor Bahru, what should I plan for?
Plan for getting the car back and for the mileage.
Getting the car back. Collection and delivery outside the Klang Valley are by special request and quote, so a one-way drop in JB is something to ask about before you book CHECK: can a self-drive car be returned or collected in Johor Bahru (one-way rental), and at what fee.
Mileage. KL to Johor Bahru and back is far beyond the 120 km a day included. Take unlimited mileage when you book; it costs less per kilometre than paying for the extra afterwards. Car rental mileage and toll cards explains the add-ons and the Touch 'n Go card for the expressway tolls. KL to Johor Bahru by car covers the drive itself.
For a comfortable long-distance car, the BMW 530i is RM 800 a day.
If it's a road trip south you want
You don't need Singapore for that. Melaka is an easy day out (see the KL to Melaka day trip by car), and the hill stations, Penang and the east coast are all open to a Grandpride rental. The whole fleet can go anywhere on the peninsula.
I live in Singapore. Can I rent from you?
Yes, but rent the car here. Fly or take the train to Kuala Lumpur and we'll deliver to your hotel anywhere in the Klang Valley: free within 10 km of our Petaling Jaya showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Renting a car in Kuala Lumpur as a tourist covers licences, tolls and what to bring.
To be driven to the airport or to JB, use the chauffeur booking page. For a road trip that stays this side of the causeway, ask us which car suits the distance.
