A proposal car has one of three jobs: it's where you ask, how you arrive, or how the two of you leave afterwards. Pick the job first. If it's where you ask, drive a convertible yourself; the Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 is RM 1,000 a day. If it's how you arrive, book a chauffeur, so you can sit in the back and concentrate on your nerves; a Mercedes-Benz S-Class starts at RM 300 an hour. If it's the getaway after friends and family jump out, a supercar or a retro roadster makes the photo.

Two or three weeks before
Book as soon as you have the date. A self-drive car shows as not available once someone else has it, and online chauffeur bookings need at least two days' notice anyway.
Keep the booking secret:
- Book in your own name. Only the named renter may drive a self-drive car, so if you're driving, the booking is yours alone.
- Think about delivery. It's free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley, and it can go to any address there, the venue included CHECK: how much notice delivery needs, and whether a delivery can be timed to the minute. But a car turning up at a shared home raises questions. A friend can collect it from the showroom instead if their details are on the booking. Where the car can wait at a venue is the venue's decision.
- Grandpride confirms chauffeur trips by phone. Make sure that call comes to you, not to a shared number.

The week before
Choose the spot, and a dry alternative. Sunset in Kuala Lumpur falls at roughly 7 pm to 7.30 pm all year round, so the light is easy to plan. Rain is the variable: know where you'd shelter, or pick a place where you can ask under cover. A closed car with rain on the roof works too.

On the day, with a self-drive convertible
- Afternoon. Collect the car, or have it delivered. Put the ring on you, not in a door pocket or the glovebox. In an open car that matters.
- About 6.30 pm. Arrive at your spot, half an hour before sunset. The heat has eased, the light is softer, and you have time to find the right place to stop.
- Around 7 pm. Ask.
On the day, with a chauffeur
- 5.00 pm. Pickup. Book 5 pm to 9 pm and you cover sunset and dinner. The first two hours are at the normal rate; hours starting between 7 pm and 11 pm are 30% more, so the last two are at the evening rate. The price shown before you reserve already includes it.
- The chauffeur waits nearby while you propose. Hourly bookings run 3 to 23 hours with as many stops as you need.
- 9.00 pm. Home, or on to wherever the night goes.
After the yes
