Car rental for a photoshoot in Kuala Lumpur

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 5 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Mitsuoka Rock Star

Ask before you pick the car. Car rental for a photoshoot in Kuala Lumpur works like any other Grandpride rental, by the day, but shoots aren't covered by published terms, so tell us what you're making and get the answer in writing CHECK: are photoshoots and filming allowed in self-drive rentals, and does commercial filming need a separate agreement, rate or fee?. Then choose: the retro Mitsuoka Rock Star at RM 1,900 a day for a vintage look, a roadster for open-air couple shots, or a supercar such as the Lamborghini Huracán, from RM 6,100 a day, for a music video.

Sewa kereta untuk photoshoot juga dikira sehari: Mitsuoka Rock Star RM 1,900 sehari, Huracán bermula RM 6,100 sehari. Tanya kami dahulu sama ada penggambaran anda dibenarkan.

Choose the location, then the car

A car that looks good in a showroom can vanish in a frame. A pale car disappears against white colonial buildings and a black one into a night street, so pick the place first. Dark, glossy paint reflects the crew, the light stands and the sky; plan the angles or go lighter. A long bonnet, a low roof or round headlamps read from across the street, while most modern SUVs look alike at a distance. And KL's midday sun is hard on paint and on faces. Early morning and the hour before sunset are kinder to both.

Don't mix eras. A 1960s-style roadster suits a vintage theme and a supercar suits pace; putting both in one shoot rarely works.

For a vintage or pre-wedding theme

The Mitsuoka Rock Star is the obvious one: a Japanese-built roadster styled after 1960s sports cars, with a long nose, rounded wings and chrome, rented by the day like anything else. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL is the other classic shape in the fleet, but it's listed as wedding only, so ask whether a pre-wedding shoot counts CHECK: can the 300SL be rented for a pre-wedding shoot, and on what terms?. Our pre-wedding photoshoot car guide goes further into themes and timing, and convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur compares the SLK, the Z4 and the Rock Star with the roof down in KL weather.

For a supercar shoot

A Huracán starts from RM 6,100 a day, a McLaren 720S from RM 7,700, and the Ferrari 458 Italia is RM 7,200. The price is itemised before you reserve: the rental for your dates, then each option you ticked. Our supercar rental guide covers the whole range.

Take more protection than usual on a set. A crowd, equipment close to the bodywork and a low nose near kerbs all add risk. Grandpride Protection+ takes the excess to zero on damage and theft, glass and tyres included, and the price for each car shows as you book.

Put these to us in writing

  1. Personal or commercial? Say which. A music video or an advert may be treated differently from a couple's portraits.
  2. Who drives on camera? Only the named renter may drive a self-drive car, so book in that person's name.
  3. Will anything touch the car? Suction mounts, rigs, smoke, confetti and props on the bonnet all risk the paint and trim CHECK: rules on camera rigs, props and effects on or near the car.
  4. Where's the location? Delivery is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley, but a car park, studio or estate may be different CHECK: can a car be delivered to a shoot location, and with how much notice?.
  5. How long do you need it? Self-drive cars are priced by the day CHECK: is there a shorter, half-day rate for shoots?.

Keep the replies. The location has its own rules too: malls, hotels, private estates and heritage buildings set their own conditions, and filming on a public road or in a public park may need permission from the local authority. That part is for your photographer or production team.

On the day

Check the car's page before anything else; days already taken are greyed out. Ask for delivery well before first light so there's time to place the car and wipe it down. If the couple or the director is busy, someone else can collect the car from the store as long as their details are on the booking. Mileage rarely matters: 120 km a day covers most shoots in the Klang Valley, and if you're heading up a hill road or out to the coast, add a package when you book.

You reserve with a RM 50 booking fee online, which comes off the total, and pay the rest in store or in person.

If the car is part of an arrival rather than the set (a launch, a gala, a premiere), have it driven. The chauffeured GrandRide Limousine, in white or black, is meant for that, and so are the BMW i7 from RM 600 an hour and the Bentley Bentayga Mansory from RM 800 an hour.
