For classic car rental in KL, Grandpride has two cars with a vintage look. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL is RM 2,200 a day and listed for weddings. The Mitsuoka Rock Star is RM 1,900 a day: a modern two-seat roadster styled after a 1960s American sports car. If you want to drive it yourself, it's the Rock Star. "Classic" can mean two different cars
When people search for a vintage car they usually mean one of two things. Either a genuinely old car, with decades-old engineering, often no modern air-conditioning, and the charm and fragility that go with it. Or a classic look on a modern car: chrome, curves and round headlamps, with modern brakes, steering and comfort underneath.
In Kuala Lumpur that difference is practical. A wedding day in the heat, with a bride in a heavy gown and an afternoon storm on the way, goes better in a car that starts every time and cools the cabin. Ask which kind you're getting before you fall for a photo.
The 300SL
Mercedes-Benz has used the 300 SL name more than once: on the famous 1950s sports car, and again on SL roadsters of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Grandpride lists its car as a Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupé.
The listing says wedding only. What that means in practice is confirmed with you when you ask CHECK: is the 300SL rented only for weddings, and does it come with a driver, set hours, a set route or photo-only use?. Since the terms aren't published, put your plan to Grandpride in writing before the date: the venues, the hours you need the car, the route and who will drive.
There is one 300SL in the fleet, and it can only be at one wedding at a time. Grandpride's rental page invites couples to ask about a classic car or a supercar for the day, so ask as soon as you have a date.
The Rock Star
Mitsuoka builds the Rock Star in Japan on the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 and styles the body after the 1960s Chevrolet Corvette. Only 200 were made. It looks retro from every angle, and it drives like the modern roadster it is.
It has two seats and a small boot, so it's a car for the couple, not the family. It's self-drive, and you can take it anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia; 120 km a day is included, so add a mileage package for anything longer. Its calendar is on the Mitsuoka Rock Star page. Book the Rock Star for a pre-wedding shoot, a couple's getaway car or an anniversary drive. Ask about the 300SL if you want the wedding car itself to look like another decade, and you're happy to plan around whatever its terms turn out to be.
Choose neither if what you want is formality rather than nostalgia. A Rolls-Royce or a long-wheelbase S-Class with a chauffeur gives you a classic shape, a cool cabin and nobody from the wedding party at the wheel. Often the best plan uses two cars: the classic for the portraits and the arrival, and a chauffeured limousine or a seven-seat MPV for everything else. A two-seat roadster is hard work across a full day of ceremonies.
Practical points for the day
- On a self-drive booking only the named renter may drive. Book in the name of the friend or relative who will drive the couple. Someone else can collect the car if their details are on the booking.
- 120 km a day covers most wedding routes inside the Klang Valley.
- Delivery to your door or venue is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley.
- Fuel isn't included. The car goes back with the level it had at collection.
- An open car is lovely early in the morning and in the hour before sunset, and harsh at midday. Agree where it can shelter in a downpour, and how long the roof takes to close.
- A low car and a long gown need a rehearsal. Try getting in and out before the day, in the shoes you'll wear.
