The hour you collect a 1 day car rental in KL decides when it has to be back: with Grandpride, the day runs 24 hours from collection, with 120 km included CHECK: confirm a rental day runs 24 hours from the pick-up time, so 10 am Saturday to 10 am Sunday is one day and 10 am to 11 am the next day is two, and whether any grace period applies. So choose the hour before you choose the car.
Say you want a car for a Saturday wedding dinner and a drive the next morning. This is how the day runs.
A few days before: book
Pick the car on the vehicle list with your dates and times entered. Anything already booked shows as not available, and on each car's page the taken days are greyed out. Then choose:
- protection: Basic Cover is included, a Loss Damage Waiver lowers the excess, Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft and adds glass and tyres;
- mileage: 120 km is in the price, and you can add 50 km, 100 km or unlimited;
- a Touch 'n Go card, loaded with RM 50 to RM 500, if you'll use tolled highways.
Check out as a guest, choose delivery or collection in store, add the driver's details and reserve. The itemised price is on screen before you confirm, and only a RM 50 booking fee is paid online, deducted from the total.
Book in the name of whoever will drive. Only the named renter may drive a Grandpride self-drive car, so a one-day rental for a couple means one of you drives all day.
Saturday, 3 pm: the car arrives
Delivery is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom in Section 13, and RM 100 anywhere else in the Klang Valley CHECK: how much notice delivery needs, and the earliest and latest delivery times. Or collect it from the showroom, which is open 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 8 pm on Sunday. If you can't be there, someone else can collect it for you, as long as their details are on the booking.
Choosing 3 pm rather than 10 am is what keeps this to one day. The dinner is at 8 pm and the drive is Sunday morning, so a 3 pm start covers both and the car is due back at 3 pm on Sunday.
3.10 pm: walk round the car
Before you drive off, take photos of every panel, the wheels and the windscreen, and note the fuel level and the mileage. It takes ten minutes, and it's your record at the return. Our rental car inspection checklist lists what to look at.
Evening and next morning: drive
120 km goes further than it sounds if you stay in the Klang Valley: an evening across KL and PJ and a Sunday morning drive should fit inside it. Melaka doesn't: it's about 145 km each way, close to 300 km there and back, so even the +100 km add-on (220 km in all) falls short. Take unlimited mileage for that one. Sunday, before 3 pm: return
Bring the car back with the fuel at the same level you collected it. Fill up at a station near the showroom or your delivery address, not one 40 km away. How much is a car rental for 1 day?
The car's day rate, plus any options you choose. Each car has its own rate on its page: a Perodua Myvi is RM 200, a Mercedes-Benz E200 Coupe RM 2,800 and a Ferrari 458 Italia RM 7,200, each with 120 km and Basic Cover.
Can I rent a car for just a few hours?
A self-drive rental is charged by the day CHECK: is one day the minimum for every car, including supercars?. If you only need a few hours of driving, a chauffeur booked by the hour is often the better fit: from 3 hours, online at least two days ahead.
What about a 1 day car rental with driver?
There are two ways. A Grandpride chauffeur comes with the car, a Vellfire, Alphard, S-Class or BMW i7 among others, booked by the hour on the chauffeur booking page. Or, if you have your own car and just need someone to drive it, the driver service is RM 385 for an 8-hour day, door to door with unlimited stops, plus overtime after that.
