A KL to Melaka day trip by car fits comfortably into one day. Melaka is about 145 km from Kuala Lumpur, roughly two hours each way on the North–South Expressway, which leaves five or six good hours in the old town. The round trip is about 300 km, so in a rental you want unlimited mileage, or you book a chauffeur by the hour and let someone else drive.
The route is short to describe. Take the E2, the southern stretch of the North–South Expressway, towards Johor Bahru. Leave at the Ayer Keroh exit and follow the Ayer Keroh Highway for about 12 km into Melaka town. The slowest part is getting out of the Klang Valley, and weekends and public holidays are busier both ways. Leaving before 8 am does more for the day than anything else.
The day
This assumes a weekday or a Saturday, starting from KL or Petaling Jaya, home for dinner.
8 am. Leave, and be on the expressway before the morning traffic builds.
10 am. Arrive and park once. The heritage centre is compact and best on foot, so find one car park near the river and leave the car there for the day. On weekends, getting there by mid-morning makes finding a space easier.
10.30 am. Start at the Red Square. The red Stadthuys was put up by the Dutch in 1650 as the governor's office, and Christ Church stands beside it. This is the heart of the Melaka half of the "Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca" World Heritage site.
12.30 pm. Lunch. Melaka is known for Peranakan (Nyonya) cooking such as Nyonya laksa, and for chicken rice balls and asam pedas. Eat where it's busy.
2 pm. Cross the river to Jonker Street, Jalan Hang Jebat, for the old shophouses and small galleries.
4 pm. Slow down. Walk the riverside, or sit with a coconut shake before the drive.
5 pm. Leave. You're back in the Klang Valley at around 7 pm, close to dusk.
With children or older parents along, drop a stop rather than rushing all of them. You'll enjoy three things more than five.
If it's a weekend: the night market
From Friday to Sunday, Jonker Street turns into the Jonker Walk night market from about 6 pm to midnight, closed to traffic. It's why a lot of people go at the weekend.
Staying for it means starting home at 9 or 10 pm after a long day on your feet, then two hours of expressway in the dark. That's the point where a driver earns their fee. If you'd rather drive yourself, stay the night and come back the next morning.
Driving yourself
Every Grandpride rental includes 120 km a day, and you can add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited. A Melaka day trip is about 300 km plus some driving in town. Even +100 km gives you only 220 km, about 80 km short, so take unlimited; it costs less per kilometre than paying the car's per-km rate on the distance over. Our guide to car rental mileage and toll cards compares the packages.
A smaller car is easier in old-town lanes and car parks. The Mini Cooper Clubman is RM 1,100 a day and the Honda Jazz RM 600. If you need more seats, look through the whole fleet.
Only the named renter drives, so that person does both legs. The car goes back with the same fuel level it had at collection. And the E2 has no cash lanes: tick the Touch 'n Go card when you book and choose a balance from RM 50 to RM 500, which is exactly what you pay for it. If you're coming from overseas, read renting a car in Kuala Lumpur as a tourist before you collect.
Being driven, and how the hours add up
A chauffeur booked by the hour stays with you all day, drops you at the door of each stop and deals with parking while you walk. Grandpride's hourly bookings run from 3 to 23 hours, and a Melaka day usually needs 10 to 12.
Two rules shape the price. Hours starting between 7 pm and 11 pm cost 30% more, and from 11 pm to 7 am 50% more. Bookings over 12 hours get 10% off the total.
The weekday plan above, 8 am to 7 pm, is eleven daytime hours. A weekend night-market day from 9 am to 11 pm is ten daytime hours plus four evening hours at 30% more, with 10% off the lot because it runs past 12 hours. In a Toyota Vellfire with chauffeur, daytime hours are RM 150 each. Hourly chauffeur prices has more worked examples, and self-drive vs chauffeur helps you choose. To price your own day, use Book a chauffeur.
Dari KL ke Melaka kira-kira dua jam untuk jarak lebih kurang 145 km melalui Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan, dan lebih lama pada hujung minggu dan cuti umum.
If you'd rather swap the old town for the sea, the drive from KL to Port Dickson is shorter and ends at the beach.
