If you're going to return a rental car late, message before the return time, not after. With Grandpride a rental day is 24 hours from the time you picked the car up, so the clock runs from your pickup time and not from midnight or the showroom's opening hour. CHECK: confirm a rental day runs 24 hours from the pick-up time. How much an hour or two over costs is CHECK: is there a grace period on late returns, and how late hours are charged: hourly, half day or full extra day.
How the 24-hour day works
When you book, you choose a pickup time and a return time, and the booking form counts the days between them in blocks of 24 hours. A few examples with a 10 am pickup on Friday:
| Return | Days charged |
|---|---|
| Saturday 9.30 am | 1 |
| Saturday 10 am | 1 |
| Saturday 11 am | 2 |
| Sunday 10 am | 2 |
Watch the third row. One hour past the 24 turns one day into two on the booking form. So choose a realistic return time at the start. If you know you'll want the car until lunchtime, book until lunchtime, and you'll see the real price before you reserve.
The same arithmetic tells you something useful about pickup times. Collect at 6 pm on Friday and return at 6 pm on Sunday and you have the whole weekend, two evenings included, for two days' rental.
Late on the day: what to do
In the Klang Valley, traffic is the obvious risk. A return that looked easy at noon can slip by an hour once the evening jam starts on the Federal Highway or the LDP, and festive weekends are worse.
- Message us on WhatsApp or call +6010 322 3223 as soon as you know, with your booking name and the time you now expect to arrive.
- Ask whether to extend the booking or just arrive late. The car may be booked by someone else straight after you, so the answer depends on the calendar CHECK: how an extension is arranged and charged, and what happens if the car is booked for the next renter.
- Keep the fuel to the level it was at collection. When you're running late it's tempting to skip the petrol station, but a low tank is a second problem on top of the late one.
- Don't speed to make it. A camera summons can turn up long after the rental, with demerit points attached. Our guide on who pays traffic fines on a rental car explains how they reach you.
Late because you want more days
That's an extension, and it's easier to arrange the earlier you ask. Before the day, check on the car's page whether the dates after your return are still free: the car pages grey out days that are already taken. If they're open, message us to extend. If they're greyed out, someone else has the car next, and you'll want to swap to a different car or bring it back on time.
A longer rental also changes your mileage. Each extra day comes with its own 120 km, and the +50 km and +100 km packages are priced per day. Our mileage and toll card guide explains how the add-ons work.
Planning the return so it isn't late
- Avoid returning in the evening peak if you can. Our guide to the best times to drive in KL shows the hours to avoid.
- On a long weekend or a festive holiday, add margin. Highway operators publish a travel time advisory in the PLUS app before major holidays, and our festive traffic guide covers the worst days.
- Coming back from a road trip, plan to arrive the evening before and return in the morning, rather than driving through the day to beat the return time.
- Leave ten minutes for the return check. It's quicker if you took photos at pickup, as our inspection checklist suggests.
To book a return time that already fits your plans, pick your dates on the vehicle list and the price updates before you reserve.
