Self-drive vs chauffeur mostly comes down to hours. Self-drive is priced by the day, so it wins on long days and road trips. A chauffeur is priced by the hour, so a three-hour dinner run is often cheaper with a chauffeur than a full day's rental of the same car. Self-drive includes 120 km a day and Basic Cover; on top you pay your own fuel (the car goes back at the level you collected it), tolls, parking, and any protection upgrade or extra kilometres you pick. Chauffeur bookings run from 3 to 23 hours, with 10% off past 12 hours. Hours that start between 7 pm and 11 pm cost 30% more, between 11 pm and 7 am 50% more, and the airport and Genting are flat fares instead CHECK: whether fuel, tolls and parking are included in the hourly chauffeur price. Go through these in order. The first one that gives a clear answer usually settles it.
1. How many hours do you need the car?
Under about half a day, look at a chauffeur first. A full day or more, look at self-drive; the more hours you use, the better a day rate works. Several days, or a road trip, is self-drive territory: add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited mileage, and go anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia.
2. Will anyone be drinking?
If yes, chauffeur, or a Grandpride driver for your own car. Don't plan to drive after a drink; the drink driving penalty in Malaysia sets out how heavy the penalties are as at 2026.
3. Who would drive?
On a Grandpride self-drive car only the named renter drives, so one person does all of it. If that person would rather not, or nobody in the group meets the rental age and licence rules, take a chauffeur. The same goes for visitors not used to driving on the left, a couple on their wedding day, or a guest of honour at an event: someone else should be at the wheel.
A group or a family can all fit in an Alphard, Vellfire or Lexus LM with a chauffeur, and nobody gives up their evening to drive. And if you want to work on the way (calls, a laptop, or sleep), the back of an S-Class or an i7 is the place for it.
4. Is the drive the point?
If it's a convertible on a coast road or a sports car up a hill road, self-drive. You also get to change your plans as you go, with no schedule agreed in advance. Every self-drive car is on the vehicle list.
If the day is mostly stops in central KL, a chauffeur saves you the parking: you step out at the door and the car is waiting when you come back. KL traffic: the best times to drive shows when the roads are worst. After a long flight, a flat fare with flight monitoring and a nameboard at arrivals beats finding your way out of KLIA yourself.
5. How much notice do you have?

A chauffeur-driven car comes with a professional driver who drives you, waits for you and takes you on to the next place. You sit in the back; the route, the traffic and the parking are the chauffeur's job.
