Sports car rental in Kuala Lumpur: the cars and what they cost

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 5 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Porsche 992 Carrera 4s

Sports car rental in Kuala Lumpur with Grandpride starts at RM 1,400 a day for a Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost and goes up through Porsche, Nissan GT-R and Audi R8 coupés to a 911. Every day includes 120 km and Basic Cover. Price isn't the most useful way to sort them, though. What kind of driving you want is.

The easy ones

For a first sports car, take the Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost at RM 1,400 or the Mercedes-AMG A35 First Edition at RM 2,200. Both are easy to see out of and calm at low speed. The Mustang has the look with a forgiving turbo four-cylinder that's comfortable in traffic. The A35 is compact, all-wheel drive and quick in an everyday way, with five seats.

If you need four doors, the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 (RM 1,400) is a four-door with a fierce turbo four, and the CLA45 S (RM 1,900) is the same with more power. The AMG cars sit in the wider Mercedes-Benz rental range, from coupés to the G63.

The loud ones

The Ford Mustang 5.0, RM 2,800 a day, looks much like the 2.3 and drives very differently: a naturally aspirated V8 and rear-wheel drive, which is the sound most people are paying for.

The Nissan GT-R35, RM 2,800, has a twin-turbo V6 and all-wheel-drive grip, and carries four at a pinch.

Then there's the Nissan GT-R35 (1,000 hp) at RM 5,500. It's a heavily modified car with far more power than the standard GT-R. Don't make it your first sports car, and drive it with restraint CHECK: any extra driver experience or age requirement for the 1,000 hp GT-R?.

The precise ones

The Porsche 718 Cayman S, RM 2,800, is mid-engined, light and precise, with two seats. If you want a Porsche that feels small and agile on a winding road, this is it.

The Porsche 981 Cayman GT4, RM 3,000, has a naturally aspirated flat-six and is the purest drive on the list. Porsche built it with a manual gearbox only, so take it only if you're happy working a clutch in stop-start traffic. It's the one manual here; the rest are automatic or dual-clutch CHECK: confirm every other sports car in the fleet is automatic.

The Audi R8, RM 2,800, is a mid-engined supercar you could use every day, with two seats.

The 911

The Porsche 992 Carrera 4S, RM 6,100 a day, is the most usable of the three Porsches day to day: all-wheel drive, four seats, and the most confident of them on a wet road. The rear seats in the four-seat coupés suit children or short trips. If you'd like a 911 for months rather than days, a car subscription in Malaysia is the way to do it.

All-wheel drive helps in the Klang Valley's afternoon rain. Here that's the 992 Carrera 4S, the GT-R and the AMG cars.

The BMW M4 Competition Coupé, with a twin-turbo straight-six, is also in the fleet, priced on request; send your dates on WhatsApp. Every coupé is on the coupé list, and for a Lamborghini, Ferrari or McLaren, see the supercar rental guide for Malaysia.

Your first half hour, and the rest of the day

Ask which drive mode the car is in before you set off, then take the first half hour slowly: where the corners are, how sharp the brakes are, how quickly the throttle answers. Low front ends scrape on steep condo ramps, speed bumps and kerbs, so take ramps slowly and at an angle. Heavy afternoon downpours are common in the Klang Valley, and wide tyres can skim standing water; slow down early and leave a long gap. Expressway limits top out at 110 km/h, lower in many places, speed cameras are common, and a sports car makes it easy to go faster than you think.

A pothole can damage a low-profile tyre or rim. Basic Cover is included, a Loss Damage Waiver lowers the excess, and Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft and includes tyres and glass. Each is priced for the car and shown when you book. The car goes back with the same fuel level it had at collection CHECK: which fuel grade each car should use. And if you're thinking of a circuit: CHECK: may rented cars be driven on a race circuit such as Sepang, and is that covered by any protection option?

How far 120 km goes

Rough round trips from the Petaling Jaya showroom; your own route will differ.

Day outRough round tripAdd
City, dinner and a scenic drive in the Klang ValleyUnder 120 kmNothing
PJ to KLIA and backAbout 110 kmNothing, or 50 km for a margin

Even +100 km gives only 220 km a day, short of Melaka and back, which is why the long trips say unlimited. Anything beyond your allowance is billed at the car's own per-km rate, shown when you book. The car stays in Peninsular Malaysia, so no Singapore or Thailand. Car rental mileage limits and toll cards explains the add-ons.

To book, pick your dates on the vehicle list (booked cars show as not available), then the car, times, protection, mileage and a Touch 'n Go card loaded with RM 50 to RM 500. Choose delivery in the Klang Valley or pick-up at the PJ showroom, and add the driver's details; only the named renter may drive. Online you pay a RM 50 booking fee that comes off the itemised total, and the rest in store or in person. CHECK: licence, minimum age, ID and deposit required for sports cars.
